Taking taxis in Florence?

I'm staying a few km from the historical center and was wondering if taxis are expensive, safe, honest? I read there's a taxi stand at the train station. Anywhere else near the center?

Hi Dianne,

I've taken a taxi from the train station to the hotel (just across the ponte vecchio) and found it to be quite reasonable, maybe 5 USD or so. Other than that we just walked or took the bus everywhere.

Have fun

Mary

If where you are staying is close to a bus route and you plan to travel back and forth a lot take a look at the Florence bus web site at www.ataf.net The site is very good and has an English section.
Ian

Taxis are cheap and plentiful...there are cab stands near almost every major piazza, often down the street from the larger hotels.

We stayed by the train station and walked everywhere. It's amazing how accessible everything is. We found the cabbies all over Italy (even Rome) to be very fair and cheap.
