Don't forget about Switzerland's require vignette you must buy if your rental car does not come with it to use the country's freeways - about $35-40 or so if you have to buy it when first entering the autobahns - if you don't and get nabbed you face a steep fine.

Car rentals may have it on but ask about that IMO

PalenQ, Sunstar, Ingo...

This extremely late, albeit I owe you all a BIG THANKYOU. YOu made our trip even more perfect. SWitzerland is beautiful and all your suggestions were just right.
Thumbs up PalenQ for the Lauterbrunnen Gimmelwald Schilthorn hike/ train/ cable car combo. This was awesome...will do it again.
Enjoyed the boat ride on Thun. Titlis/ Jungfrau / Schilthorn were gorgeous. Enjoyed the view and the food @ Kliene Schedigg.
Drive from Lucerne to IL was breathtaking. Will add Neiderhorn to my recommendations..the view from here is exquisite and surreal. We stayed in beatenberg and the valley looked beautiful We also did a day trip like a figure of * around Thun and Brienz. Saw many beautiful waterfalls.

Could not do Zermatt, dig Montreuz instead...Daughter loved the castle.

So for our next trip...Zermatt, Gstaad. Glacier express and some more of what we saw this time around.

Not sure if you will still read this post..but since I got on Fodors again planning another vacation...I knew I owed you guys a BIG THANKYOU.

hi asmama,
Thanks for discussing your trip in here.
I am in a similar situation like you but my family is bit bigger.
We are 6 adults and 3 kids (age 2, 5, 10) and have hired a 9 seater Van for our Switzerland trip.
Would you be kind enough to tell that how you have divided your trip into journey by train and car.
Which train tickets you have taken and how much did it cost.
Is parking a bug issue in cities?
I can make out from your experience that Lauterbrunnen -> Gimmelwald --> Schilthorn trip is must do with the combination of car, train and cable car. Was it covered by whatever train pass you took?

I am going to follow whatever you have written here. In this context can you share your other experiences of Switzerland and what did kids liked the most.

Many thanks!

With a Swiss Pass the whole route is covered - from Interlaken or Lauterbrunnen, beyond which cars cannot travel on this route. The scintillating aerial cableway from Lauterbrunnen train station right up the cliff to Grutschalp and then the wonderful tiny train that rolls along the cliff edge to Murren and the cableway from Murren down to Gimmelwald and then that aerial cableway that plunges dramatically back down to the Lauterbrunne Valley at Stechelberg and the postal bus back to Lauterbrunnen - all 100% covered by a Swiss Pass so a great value for that day if you have one.
