Glacier Express:
8 hrs in the same train can get too much, even if the scenery is changing all the time.
In summer, it is a must to leave the train at Andermatt and to go on by Post Bus over some mountain passes or tho enjoy the Furka steam train.
In April, these passes are closed because of snow and dangers of avalanches.
May be you could leave the train at Fiesch (at 3pm) and take a gondola to Fiescheralp (stunning views to the mountains along the border with Italy up to Mont Blanc), but only if the weather is fine and if the gondola will still be running (this year they ended on April 12th). Standard trains from Fiesch to Zermatt every hr.
Other itineraries:
Maloja - Lugano - Locarno - Centovalli - Brig... (weekends only)
Thusis - San Bernardino - Locarno - Centovalli - Brig (daily)

If you have time - a few days to go between Zermatt and St Moritz/Pontresina then you could do a lovely non-direct trip:
Zermatt to Brig to Domodossola - then take the scenic Centovalli ("100 valleys" train thru a spit of Italy to Locarno and go by train to Lugano - stay over there in that lovely city on a lovely lake - then next day or two take the Bernina Express bus to Tirano, Italy and hop the BE or local trains over the same route from there to St Moritz/Pontresina.
Or better IME take the Maloja Pass bus from Lugano via a stop at Lake Como up and over the awesome Maloja Pass to St Moritz. And do the Bernina Express as a day trip - allowing time to trek by foot or gondolas to glaciers - walk around the Alpine lake near the summit, etc.
