Gruezi - i agree about the charms of Zurich - but can you really call it 'a small Swiss city' - is not it the largest Swiss city really?
folks like Lucerne because it is a lot smaller than say Zurich - everything there is within a mile or so of the train station - that said i could spend a day in Lucerne and days in Zurich.

I guess my punctuation was wrong! I was thinking along these lines - it's a small city, and it's Swiss, although it's a big city for this little country.
I actually don't know if it feels bigger or smaller than Geneva, because I've not been there (embarrassing, I know). I always feel like geographically Basel feels bigger but here are the population stats:
Largest cities: Zurich, 971,800 (metro. area), 348,100 (city proper); Geneva, 178,900; Basel, 162,800; Lausanne, 117,400
Anyway, I'm glad you've discovered it's charms. We can spread the word (or maybe not!)
