Thank you so much. We started now thinking of going from Lucerne to the Montreux area then down to the Ticino area and then to Menaggio. We are thinking a car may be the better option as well now.

Oh, please don't drive, especially not to/in Montreux. The public transport in Switzerland is second to none, and it's a great way to get inside the culture (instead of being isolated inside your private bubble).
In Montreux, you'll get a Riviera Card that will make the local busses & trains & cable cars free. Busses run every 10 minutes, run from Villeneuve (other side of Chillon) to & through Montreux, and to & through Vevey. Bus stops are at about every corner. Really, it's quicker and easier to get around the area without a car!
There is already damage to the lake & countryside because of emissions & climate change. In summer, there is a greasy gray haze that sits over the lake.
You just may be very happy you helped keep the area pristine!
