Hi! Thanks S' for the info about Erlenbach. I only have a few minutes, but I've got to tell you that last night after Awards Night (90 minutes), I started digging out my old trip stuff like postcards and photographs and receipts and ticket stubbs and little maps and brochures -- all mixed up, no order-- You folks have got me so excited, plus a friend of mine has just left for Rome on business to be combined w/pleasure in Florence. Anyway, my wanderlust is in high gear now. I came upon a brochure from Wimmis (on your route from Speiz?) -- At one time I considered staying there, but we chose Leissigen in the end and were delighted w/that little village. Got to get back to chores. Love to all. J.

Topping for no good reason but to encourage those w/time on their hands to visit this site with its wonderful lake photographs.

(Just in case you missed my other notations.)

I'll be waiting for a SGFTWLS V when the GTG folks return home. I cannot wait to read all the details. J.

Ciao JW, from Austria (for a day from Lake Bled)... not Switzerland but getting closer. I am looking forward to some cool weather. It has been nothing but hot the whole two weeks I've been in Europe. I'm a limp rag.

Hello Grasshopper!

Glad to hear you're having a good time.
If you're looking for cooler weather, just don't come to Switzerland!

We had some rain last night, but the heat wave is back today!
Just had a marvellous lunch in a delightful restaurant in a stunning garden.
Not in the mood for work now....

That was a late b-day lunch at the Hotelfachschule Zurich called 'Belvoirpark' where the staff can show what they have been tought at the very highly rated school nearby.

It's an old mansion in the most beautiful park (Belvoirpark) on the lakeside, full of iris and roses (not yet in bloom though).

We were seated in the garden, under large white-blue umbrellas which protected us from the sun and felt like on holiday.
No beer, but champagne, veal steak, gratin dauphinois and different vegetables.
To finish, Coupe Romanoff (strawberries, vanilla ice-cream topped with clotted cream) tart for dessert.
Coffee and delightful small friandises.

No mosquitos. They don't come till August, in general.

But hey, that was an exception. Usually, my lunch break lasts about 1 hour and not three!

Is that ok? I hope, because I won't give more details.

Merci beaucoup, Ursula. So sorry if I sounded bossy, but when it's June w/no travel plans, I sometimes forget my manners. The sky is even blacker here than it was 15 minutes ago. People are concerned about the West Nile Virus, which is carried by our mosquitos; dead birds are being found to let us know that each little mosquito may be the deadly one. Makes you want to visit Louisiana, yes? I'll visit the belvoir site and copy the info. Irises are my favorite flower, absolutely. Here they bloomed for two weeks in March and are now only a pretty memory. J.

You're welcome, jmw.

The irises are almost over though.
I meant, the roses are not yet in bloom.
The iris garden is famous.

Hi all,

I just had a thought: When are Grasshopper and Judi supposed to be on Lago Maggiore? The temps are even higher there than in Zurich, yes? They'll swelter, no ac at the HP.

By the by, I've been looking through old brochures from years ago when snail mail packages of lovely stuff arrived after a written inquiry to a canton or village. Came upon one from Thunersee. Wow. Why anyone would pass up the chance to stay in one of those villages, I can't imagine. Actually, I think views from Brienzersee might be more impressive, but the PR package from Spiez is dazzling.

I do have a question. Has anyone stayed in Sigriswil? (Don't I remember a post some time ago about someone visiting relatives there?) It is above the north side of the lake, but it appears to have spectacular views toward the triple peaks. That was one thing we didn't have from Leissigen, as much as I loved that village; our windows faced the lake toward the north, and the only peak we could see was Niesen.

Happy travels, y'all. J.

Hi-
I am interested in anyone's thoughts and ideas on Sigriswil. We are scheduled to stay at the Hotel Baren in Sigriswil for 4 nights in August. There is a teddy bear convention scheduled and we will be there on business. Is it easy to use the public transportation? Any good ideas on local restaurants or lakefront spots?
This will be our first trip to this area and we are looking forward to it. We will have a car as well. Thanks-Paul

Hi! Did you say teddy bear convention? Well I guess you must be able to sing my niece and nephew's favorite "Teddy Bears' Picnic"? Seriously, I took a look at the sbb.ch website for public transportation, and they seem to use buses from Thun to Gunten and then Gunten to Sigriswil. Now, if you've never been to Switzerland, don't think in terms of bus travel in other countries. Swiss buses are wonderful and punctual. From Gunten (on the lake) to Sigriswil is 8 minutes. What that means is if you use the delightful lakeboats to get around, you can boat to Gunten and then hop a bus up to Sigriswil. The lakeboat site is

bls.ch

Some sort of pass (I always use the SwissPass but others here will give you indepth cost comparisons which give me a headache but will undoubtedly save you money) will let you hop on and off boats, buses, and trains to your heart's content. Have a wonderful time. Hope the view from Sigriswil is as beautiful as my snailmail brochure claims. You might also want to search Google for Thunersee, because it does have its own website. Keep in touch. J.

oops, as usual I was reading too fast. You'll have a car. Forget everything I wrote except for the lakeboat part. They're too wonderful to miss. J.

Dear J,
You have been very generous and helpful as usual--thanks for the info. Re: Thun-I have plans to visit the city but don't know much about it. Can you give me some ideas? Historic and/or beautiful sights and areas? Special restaurants? We will just be stopping in for a day visit at best. I am especially looking for sights to visit using those lakeboats along the shoreline. Thanks. Paul

My two recommendations are to visit the castles at Thun and Oberhofen and to spend time exploring the streets of Thun. We visited Oberhofen by lakeboat from Leissigen. thunersee.ch By this Monday, you are likely to receive some restaurant recommendations if Ingo is available.

You don't say if you plan to visit Berne or go up into the mountains, both destinations worth considering if you have time. J.

p.s. Remember, Paul, if you go down to the woods today, you'd better not go alone; it's lovely down in the woods today, but safer to stay at home. Why?

Dear J,
The full story and itinerary has us staying in Lauterbrunen for 4 nights before Sigriswil. From there we intend to explore the Berner Oberland. Then the business end in Sigriswil for 4 nights. We will then go on to Annecy for 2 nights and backtrack to Basel for 2 nights before heading north. We've not stayed in any of these places before (but lots of others in Europe).
Thanks for the suggestions in Thun-I'm sure we'll get there as well as Bern, which we've always wanted to visit. We're already getting in shape for the hiking and really look forward to the exploration.
I am clueless on the woods question.
Cheers-Paul

Well, Paul, then what is a teddy bear convention? Those were words from "Teddy Bears' Picnic" and that should be the musical theme of any such convention. Unless, of course, tb's refers to something other than those fuzzy little bodies like the one Sebastian carried in "Brideshead Revisited." (Another reference from years past.) No need to reply. Your itinerary sounds great! J.

JW, You are right, it is HOT. We are loving the Panorama. When we arrived yesterday we were the only ones there and felt so terrible that Mrs. Klomen had to make dinner for just us and it was fantastic. We have our own balconies and sat out on them late into the night, talking about you and the rest of the Support Group folks. Everyone's ears should be burning good and hot.

Tomorrow we leave for Zuoz. So sorry to hear that Ingo won't be there. But S, if you don't show up we shall hunt you down.

Ciao to all.
