Like sparkchaser says, there are a lot of cheap flights in Europe. If you want to visit far-flung places in Europe, cheap flights are the way to go. Look at www.whichbudget.com and www.skyscanner.com for flights.

Also check out The Thorn Tree for tips about inexpensive travel.

And you really do need to look at a guidebook or two, to help you narrow down your ideas. I like the DK series, lots of nice photos -- but too heavy to carry along.

sparkchaser I'm talking about Europe's summer. Basically I would like to escape Australian winter. However I don't mind if some places in Europe that are really good to go to have colder whether than others since the beauty of being in Europe will be forfilling enough. I'm basically just wondering what different peoples opinions are of where is good to go whilst it's summer, what makes those places so special and would it be affordable for a student to travel to and spend some time in?

Once again I'd thank everyone for their time and effort into answering my questions, I can never make up my own mind about these things and your responses have helped greatly

Also Europe's summer is the most convient time as it is usually the time of year when students like myself from Australia travel to Europe before they go to university. So a lot of my friends and their friends will be over there during the summer as well.
