My son will be attending school in Stuttgart next year and I'm looking for information on hotels, sights, restaurants, community, arts, etc. Does anyone have any information they might pass on. So far, I can find very little to go by.

There is a guy over on Trip Advisor who adores Stuttgart since he lives there, and will give you tons of information about it. All the palaces, historical info, nature stuff, museums, you name it.

I lived in Stuttgart for 2.5 years. It is a vibrant cosmopolitan city with a great downtown shopping district (centered on the Koenigstrasse), beautiful parks and vineyards, an historic zoo (the Wilhelma), excellent art museums, and a vibrant nightlife. The auto industry is of course king, with Mercedes and Porsche calling Stuttgart home (they both have amazing museums and offer factory tours). The surrounding region of Baden-Wuerttemberg is not as popular with foreign tourists as, say, Bavaria, but has many highlights (and is all the better for being a bit off the beaten track): imposing castles (Burg Hohenzollern is perhaps the best known), beautiful villages and towns of all sizes (Bad Wimpfen, Schwaebisch Hall, and Tuebingen are among my favorites), the scenic Neckar Valley and Schwaebisch Albe areas, Ludwigsburg with its Residenzschloss (the "Versailles of Germany")...the list goes on and on.

I often find that wikipedia often does a better job than a city's own website. Stuttgart's wikipedia and own website are good. I wrote to the tourist website for some of their brochures that have maps that make it easy to follow what is being said on line.

Oh, Hausfrau. I, too, lived there but it was a long time ago. I miss it and wish I had the opportunity to see it again, through more mature eyes. There is much I would do that I passed up before.

Gary, you will have the opportunity to visit Stuttgart's amazing Weihnachtsmarkt. It is one of the largest in Europe and (IMHO) among the best!

cynthia, I thought I had all the time in the world and I still didn't see or do it all. Just be glad you had the opportunity to live there - most people never get so lucky!
