Hi again scatcat,
Yes, you can either ferry from Interlaken to Thun, or from Interlaken to Spiez and then Thun, or return by ferry. Here's a link to a site where you can get a pdf of the schedules:
http://www.bls.ch/e/schifffahrt/fahrplan.php
I've heard that Lake Brienz is even more dramatic then Lake Thun but don't have any experience.
My own caveat -- of course the trains can take you anywhere, even if you change your plans! With several departures every hour, trains can also feed the spontaneous. I've done both, and now stick to the trains!

Thanks swandav! With the help from this forum, I should be able to occupy myself on the rainy days. I just hope that it's not too overcast to at least get a glimpse of any of the mountains.
I'm at the airport now waiting for my flight to Atlanta then onwards to Zurich.

Everyone---I am in Wengen now. Today was rainy, but we went to Thun. Unbelievable! No rain, sunny and the temperature was perfect! Back at Wengen at about 5:00 PM. Light rain and quite chilly. Tomorrow we are going to Muerren, regardless of the weather. Thanks everyone for your suggestions and encouragement.

Hope the rest of your time goes well. I hear your pain, our 2008 trip was supposed to encompass the B.O. but heavy rain was forecast so we changed plans partway through the trip. We made it back this July and had a great time.

hi scatcat,
glad you had such a good day. Forecasts can be verty deceptive - on sunday, they were forecasting rain for the whole week, and our new visitors were looking very unhappy.
by yesterday pm it had cleared up, and today was perfect. [well, almost]. forecast is good for tomorrow as well.
there is no such thing as bad weather, just unsuitable clothing! [frankly I don't believe this, but it sounds good!]
