So glad you went to La Tramoia in Barcelona. We had an entire meal there one September and were duly impressed. And the Basque areas! What a pleasure to relive them. Laguardia in Rioja was a favorite of ours too. Lucky you that you got to stay in the town. We were in a gross place in Haro where we will never stay again. The room in Laguardia you had sounds sooo romantic!
The other crabby poster was most rude, but is right in that you must let yourselves visit Galicia, Asturias and Cantabria(the rest) some day. They are lovely too. Even better with some Spanish under your belt.(Just friendly advice since I used to teach it.) Thanks for the report!

Jeez, NEDSIRELAND--a private room in a touristicalic hostal? That's no way to really connect with THE PEOPLE.
When I go to Spain (and I never spend less than 10 years in any one town so I get to really, really associate with it on a personal basis--and, of course, I only visit towns that no other non-Spaniard has ever been to), I reallllly like to bond with the local peasants, so I move into their humble abodes lock, stock, and backpack (and a very small backpack at that).
I do get some slightly bewildered looks now and then, but when I pitch in with all the family chores and activities, they soon accept me as their slightly batty, red-haired, white-bellied Tio Rufus.
I take it you've never visited the hog farm just east of the tiny village of Fatuo, you just must, and of course you should make a point of spending several days at the new sewer plant in the little hamlet of Absurdo.

Delighted to read this... even if it is long after the fact - - and chagrined to see it rather unfortunately marred by nedsireland.
I can only imagine what would happen if my truly crazy itinerary (still trying to decide on it) - - of barely two and a half days (Hondarribia/San Sebastian? Bilbao? Gernika?) were to get a similar "critique" (trashing)...
But I hope that your enthusiasm is a counter-balance to those who do not understand why we will spend only about 24 hours in the Dordogne - - and then move on to get at least a sample taste of... just a fraction of... this corner of Spain.
One idea about your report - - seems like you have more than enough stuff to do something nice on virtualtourist.com - - that way you control who comes along and tries to "graffiti" it, as a certain someone has done here.
Best wishes,
Rex

Missed the posts after my own on this one but just noticed it topped again when I clicked on my name to find my recent posts.
Mary_Fran, I'm not from the Northwest, no, I'm from London, UK (born and bred) and I'm a she!

Rex, it's YOUR trip, who cares what others think of a 24 hour stay. I've done that in places. It's not that you are asking for an opinion on that. I find it annoying when someone asks for suggestions for dining or staying some place and someone comes along and says forget it, that their suggestion is better. Our experiences are ours. An example, If someone was rude to you at a hotel and I found them helpful to me, that doesn't make the place bad. maybe it was staffed differently or maybe you were rude. Someone sharing their travel trip shopuld not be attacked in any way. Please just move on.
