Stormy weather "acqua alta" in early October in Venice?
We plan to be in Venice for 4 nights within the first 10 days of this October. We understand that storms causing flooding in San Marco often occur in the fall of the year. Can we expect to avoid bad weather in early October?

The aqua alta is caused more by tidal changes than by stormy weather. It happened most mornings during our visit to Venice (early November). It was also quite rainy and there was a low fog for several days, but cleared into gorgeous sunshine for the days after that. The local people make San Marco passable by constructing wooden platforms across the square. The waiters working in the cafes around the perimeter usually wear Wellingtons (gumboots). The flooding normally clears by around midday.

The tide rises and falls twice a day, every day. The tidal range is greatest around new moon and full moon: the sun and the moon are in line so their gravitational fields have a combined effect. The tides tend to be greatest around the equinoxes. Strong winds will make a difference: a southerly or easterly wind wind will tend to increase the height of the tide in Venezia.
