Hi ruth
I have a long file on Paris; if you'd like to see it, email me.
Even within the four-star hotels, the price can range from $350-$700 for a double.
The most convenient districts
(arrondissements) are generally considered to be the single digits (1-9)
and you will find a wide range of hotels in those areas.
You can do a search on Paris hotel on this forum, you can look through a standard guidebook for Paris, you can look elsewhere on this Fodor's website for recommendations and "rants and raves", and you can look at websites like www.paris.org
good luck

It's not critical at all where you stay as long as you're in the central area. The various areas are right next to each other, across the street from each other. There's no great demarcation line. Everyone has their own favorite area they will argue for. You'll be out and about the whole city anyway, and the city is so easy to get around you can go to most areas quickly and easily for sites, restaurants, etc. The 1st, 4th, parts of the 5th, the 6th, parts of the 7th, 8th - they would all be fine for a first timer. For more Paris information e-mail me – [email protected]

Ruth -
My husband and I found a great hotel, 4 stars, right off the Champ and it was a block from two metro stations! Hotel Rochester. A suite there was $300 us so a standard room has got to be in the $200 us range (if that is the range you seek). Marble bathrooms, fabric on all the walls and the staff was great, spoke English and recommended great site seeing tours and places to eat. On the 7th floor, you can get a view of the Effel Tower!
I found it on www.hoteldiscount.com
