Stay in Piraeus or Rafina?

Hello,

We are a family of four trying to figure out whether to spend two nights at the Twinn Downtown in Piraeus or NLH Mati in Rafina from Sept 4 to Sep 6. We will be arriving from Naxos via ferry on September 4 and flying out of Athens on September 6. The cost is exactly the same!

The way I see it. Piraeus gives you easy access to Athens and/or the Athens Riviera and public transport to the airport.

NLH Mati has a pool and is closer to the airport (guessing a cab will be 50 euros?). We stayed at the Avra once and there’s really not much to do around there but they have a free shuttle ; it seems like the NLH Mati seems a lot nicer with more places nearby to eat, etc.

We love Athens but don’t want stay there this time. Don’t want to stay in an Air BnB or deal with transport. Hotel prices are quite higher than they used to be and we now have to book suites or two rooms.

Any thoughts? This is the last two days of a 14-day holiday where we will have been in trains, planes, and buses. Want something calm and affordable

thanks in advance!!!!

If your ferry from Naxos arrives at Piraeus, as most ferries from Naxos do, suggest you stay there, as getting from Piraeus to Rafina is a bother. On the other hand, if your ferry arrives at Rafina, it’s a good choice to stay there, as most hotels in Rafina are only a few minutes from the ferry docks. It’s also easier to get to the airport from Rafina, and if like Avra, NHL Mati has a free shuttle to the airport you don’t have to worry about taxi fare. If no free shuttle there are frequent buses from Rafina to the airport.

All things equal, I much prefer Rafina over Piraeus.

Thanks so much. I’ve not booked the ferry yet - waiting to seen which place we will stay,

it seems there is a bus from Rafina to the airport every three hours?

As I recall, during summer the bus from Rafina to the airport ran every hour or two during the day. I can’t get the link to work, but the URL is ktelattikis.gr/en/rafina_airport
