I think because Stansted location is North and the OP hotel location is also North that is is not as far and so not as expensive as you think.
Also, for the OP, the "official" tube journey planning site (the "advanced" version that lets you put in date and time of day) is http://journeyplanner.tfl.gov.uk/use...T2?language=en.
You can just put in tube stations or you can use specific addresses or places of interest as your begin or end points.
It takes into account planned closures and such which do happen especially on weekends on certain lines or for construction at certain stations and the like.
And it provides maps for the walk if you use an address to get you to and from the station (or bus stop).
For a journey from Liverpool Street Station to Swiss Cottage Station and walk to Marriott on next Thursday at 7 pm it is 35 minutes, one change (Circle or Metropolitan line to Baker Street Station and change to Jubilee line there).
Or if you didn't mind a bit longer walk you can do without a change, take Metropolitan line to Finchley Road station. That trip and the walk takes 40 minutes. Other posters can comment on whether you would want to do that walk.
And there was another London thread here as to the area near that Marriott called Primrose Hill for dining and enjoying London life (and the view from the top of the hill). I think in the end you will be perfectly happy with your hotel choice and the bargain it is.

This might be getting off topic but if don't already know the website fancyapint.com, here's a couple of pubs from there not too far from your hotel and both "3 pints" rated.
http://www.fancyapint.com/pubs/pub2790.html

That website is fun to plan for a good pub near sightseeing locations too, you can search by tube station and then the map pops up showing which pubs in that area they rate and you click through to the details.
