St Petersburg only or include Moscow?

We've never been to Russia and I'm planning a short trip (4 days) to Saint Petersburg this August (DH + me) and am wondering if I should lengthen the trip to include a weekend in Moscow.

Flight to Moscow is 270 € cheaper and I'd love to take the night train, which I think would still result in less than the direct flight to Saint Petersburg. Jet lag is not an issue since we are coming from Paris.

Day 1: Moscow; night train to St Petersburg
Day 2-4: St Petersburg
night 4 train to Moscow
day 5: Moscow
day 6: fly home

Do you think that this is too much moving about?

I just returned from both places......
lengthen the trip and go to Moscow. If you don't, you will always ask yourself why you didn't include it when you were so close. It's a fascinating city and well worth the extra days. We flew into Moscow and out of St. Petersburg

They are both fascinating cities.See both.

With yhe time you have ,I would stay 1 extra night in one of the cities and fly the next morning to th other---or extend the trip by several days.

Go to Moscow, if only to stand in Red Square and tour the Armory in the Kremlin.

But, recommend flying versus the "night train" (as was emphasized to us when we were there).

Two days in Moscow would be better.

We had the same delimma, and finally just decided to do StP. We can fly directly into StP and it's only 1 or 2 hours off from where we are. My DH has been studying Russian for 2 years and is so excited about this trip (we'll also be there in mid-August). My younger son went to Moscow on a school trip last year and there is a chance of us living there in the future, so that is why we decided to focus on StP this time. BUT- a HARD DECISION!!!!

Thank you for your help; the pressure is off since I found an open jaw flight for just 158€ more than RT to Moscow.

I still am debating the dates though -- I found a great rate at the Savoy in Moscow for a weekend but then all the palaces + the Hermitage are closed on Mon, Tues in St Petersburg!! Also found a good rate for the weekend at the Radisson in St Petersburg...

My problem is that I promised my DH that it would be a short weekend trip...

Look at it with the perspective of " a long weekend " versus the length of your life.

A few days more is still only a long weekend.

Go for it.
