Any pointers on where to start - accommodation search engines etc would be great

Are you set on a resort/hotel? because you can get really great deals on apartment rentals.
First, go to this website and pick the towns you like best:
www.croatia.hr
Use the interactive map of Dalmatia: Split under Destinations.
Cross section your favorites with information from this site:
www.croatia-beaches.com
Search by region: Central Dalmatia
Next, go to the homepage of each town and you'll find links to accommodation options.
There are supposed to be great beaches along the mainland--good for kids. I have always bypassed this stretch because I was on islands, but I hope this helps you.
Heard great things about Omis and Brela.
