Speeding Ticket-Ireland

We returned from our most enjoyable, seventh, vacation to Ireland on April 14th. I was surprised today to receive a computer generated bill from the Garda for 85 Euro for speeding 51 mph in a 40 mph zone on N-7 after having picked up our rental vehicle and left Dublin. Has anyone had this happen before? How do you repsond, simply pay it by credit card? Seems a bit high for an 11 mph speeding charge. What happens if it is not paid?

HELP!

We received a parking ticket in Ireland and couldn't find the city hall to pay it so we just didn't do anything. Months later the payment showed up on our charge card after being traced back to the rental car agency.

If you were in a rental car when the offence happened, then you'd have probably signed a rental agreement authorising the rental firm to charge traffic fines to your card plus an administrative fee. Garda traced your address from the rental company and sent you the bill. If you don't pay it will probably appear on your card statement plus rental firm's handling fee. As the cost of sending a euro money order (only sensible way to pay) will come to as much as the fee charged, I'd just let the rental firm deal with it.

There are a few tricky roads (one near the foxhunter in Lucan) than the speed limit changes from something like 60 to 50mph and there is a speed camera. 85 euro is the rate as well. It's a pain as I already got one in an area where I never saw a camera or a sign of the speed limit.
