Special hotels 1 - 2 hours from Fiumicino airport
I will be arriving at Fiumicino in October and renting a car. We won't be arriving until about 2pm so I don't want to drive too far the first night. The trip is still in the planning stage but I think we're heading to Le Marche. I'm looking for a special hotel for the first night so that I don't have to drive too far. I'm thinking of Tivoli but I've been there before and was hoping to try someplace new. Does anyone know of any special places relatively close to Rome?

This is close to Rome and we enjoyed a few hours exploring the area:

However, tripadvisor reviews aren't that good. Not bad, but for a fancy place, not great.
We had a restful night and a very good upscale dinner at the hotel.

a special place (gorgeous special, not ritzy special) that's about 1.5 hours drive is viterbo. their thermal water is just wonderful. (and they have some 'wild spas' for the brave.) we stayed at a b&b Villa Farinella and had the most spectacular room with trompe l'oeil arched ceilings with a garden view from both the room and the w.c.! (hubbie spotted a v rare bird form the throne!)
we love thermal waters-- and the terme de papi pool is divine...especially after a long flight. the pool can be used for a day fee.

From another thread, on the SAbine Hills, that I began a few years ago:

Hotel Abitart http://www.abitarthotel.com 20 minutes from the airport is the easiest place to reach: you just have to drive all straight on from airport on the highway and then continue on via Ostiense. It's an art hotel with original design interiors. Then they also have a great restaurant so you won't have to take your car again to reach restaurants outside.
