I was glad that I followed my day-time visit to the Alhambra by my evening visit. That meant that I had already listened to the audio (which I doubt is available in the evening) and I had seen the architectural details up close in day light. And that meant that when I visited at night, I was better prepared for what I was seeing (and not seeing -- the light was not bright during the evening) and could, instead, focus on the experience -- the hushed sounds of the fountains, the smell of flowers and shrubs, the shadows that flickered across the walls. I believe there is now also an option to visit the Generalife gardens in the evening. I'd jump at the chance to do that the evening before you daytime visit to the Alhambra (followed by your evening visit to the Nasrid Palace).

Casa Patas, Cardamomo and Corral de la Morería are among the best flamenco tablaos in Madrid and all of Spain. Higly recommended! Casa Patas stands out as the best tablao in the country the past few years. Great artists and great atmosphere, a very fine tapas bar and reputedly fine food. I've only gone for a glass and some tapas before the performance.
Some clips from Casa Patas the past two years:
Fuensanta La Moneta, voted best female flamenco dancer 2009 by Spanish critics: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FbO_lw2xWtU
Pastora Galván, voted best female flamenco dancer 2010 by Spanish critics: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SY6Vy9tKW3U
Olga Pericet, voted best female flamenco dancer 2011 by Spanish critics: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=55waEsaBzjM
Fantastic and cutting edge Israel Galván, he has revolutionized male flamenco dance during the past decade: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VL9Wav9v7Jc
Estrella Morente, now the world's most famous cantaora (female flamenco singer): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sejSYMSQDZo
Casa Patas is three minutes walking from supercentral Plaza Santa Ana, 60 meters off very busy Calle Atocha. Recommend the midnight performance. Perhaps have dinner first in close by Madrid classic Casa Alberto from 1827, still very popular also with locals: http://www.casaalberto.es/

question...
We have had a slight change in plans and my husband's work situation means that he will not be joining us in Spain. DD and I are still going - anything I should be aware of for female traveler? I admit I am a little nervous. I never use to feel this way until last June I got very sick in Mexico on vacation and was hospitalized...

I traveled in Spain as a solo female - I believe to all the destinations you plan to visit - and had no problems. Of course I can't make any guarantees about the experience that you and your daughter will have, but I took normal precautions and did not feel unsafe.
As for medical issues, first check your health insurance policy to see what coverage it provides when you are traveling internationally. Then consider whether you want or need evacuation and/or repatriation insurance. This old thread was recently topped and has some useful info:

If you do decided to get insurance, you can use insuremytrip.com or square mouth.com to compare options.
Sorry your husband won't be able to share this experience.

Two performances every night, at 7.30 and 9pm. Make reservations at least one day ahead. No food, no drinks, just flamenco. Entrance 18€: http://www.casadelamemoria.es/info-contacto/
Have a nice trip!

checking in from Ronda... wow is all I can say. I LOVe Spain. I loved Madrid far more than I could have ever anticipated. Our apartment was PERFECT. Loved the area!!!
We headed to Granda - the train was a bit long - (about 4.5 hours) (I slept for part of the way. We have both been bothered by jetlag more than I thought we would.)
Granda was a lively fun city - the Alhambra was without a doubt one of the most beautiful places I have been in my entire life. Stunning, truly remarkable. I am SO thankful that I got to go.
We did cut a day off Granda and on a whim rented a car and are now spending the night in LOVELY Ronda - we got a great hotel room with a huge terrace overlooking the "new" bridge... I love the quietness of Ronda and tomorrow we are going horse back riding in the am and hiking in the afternoon. We needed a little break from "city" and tons of people.
Just wanted to share that I now have the Spain "bug" I am infected!

Oh Joan... I am so delighted with this trip. It is our first time to Spain and I am in love... we are riding about 25 minutes outside of Ronda tomorrow morning. I will let you know how it goes.
Hiking down in the gorge -
I have to mention in case I forget about the amazing meal we had in Granda...restaurant Estrellas de San Nicolas... stunning views, amazing service and great food. It was pricey but lived up to the price.
