Spa suggestions: One day visit to Bagni di Petriolo or Saturnia? Are thermal pools off limits to children?

Could anyone help me choose between Bagni di Petriolo or Saturnia as a one day spa destination? We will drive from Rome, with a visit to Pitigliano along the way, and would like to spend a night in a nice, but not too expensive hotel near one of these thermal springs. I have found very little information about Bagni di Petriolo. Has anyone been there? Can you recommend a place to stay there or in/near Saturnia? Is Relais la Stellata a good choice? I also wonder whether children are permitted in the thermal pools. If the pools are off-limits, is there anything which would be of special interest to children in these areas? Thanks in advance for your help.

Don't know if Bagno Vignoni is in the area but they have a large thermal pool that is not off limits to children.

Hi!!! I'm not sure how current this information is, but it may help a bit. It'll gear you up for that spa experience though!!!

http://www.initaly.com/regions/tuscany/
rosemary.htm

This is something I wanted to do in my visit to Italy too...so, I'm interested to hear other people's suggestions as well and prices would be most helpful! Thanks for a good post!

Hi jb,
When are you planning on going? The reason I ask is that Saturnia is closing from Jan '03 through March '03 to update their facilities. It's a shame, because their "silver season" rates are the lowest of the year during these months! It's a lovely resort & they're always doing something that enchances the facilities--this past year they even added on a golf course.

Buon Viaggio,
BC

We'll be travelling at the end of November--just a week away! I just learned that the Saturnia spa is already closed for renovations, and only the thermal swimming pool is open now. That being the case, it would be helpful if anyone has suggestions for other spas in Southern Tuscany, and nearby hotels that they would recommend. Also, I'd be interested in hearing from anyone who has taken children to a spa in Italy -- what was the experience like? Were you comfortable, or did you feel out of place?

Oops. I was misinformed. The Saturnia spa isn't closed for renovations yet, but will close starting in January 2003. (I think the thermal swimming pool will still be open then, though.) Also, I'm considering one more spa town: San Casciano Bagni. Can anyone help me choose between Saturnia, San Casciano and Bagni di Petriolo? What would be your choice of a place to stay? Places I've identified so far are Il Poggio near San Casciano and Relais la Stellata near Saturnia.
