Southern Spain Christmas

My boyfriend and I have decided on Southern Spain/Portugal for winter holidays, and are looking for somewhere to spend Christmas/New Years. Which city do you think is the best? Do we need to book in advance? We are two university students on a very limited budget.
Thanks!

Go to Jerez in Andalucia and live a different way of feeling the Christmas time.

I've spent Christmases in Cordoba, Sevilla and Lisboa. Hotels are very quiet then. Trains are heavily booked as many people travel to spend Christmas with their families, but there's no problem finding hotels. I'd suggest staying in a city rather than a small town where the choice of restaurants and hotels open will be limited.

We spent almost 2 weeks last Xmas in
Seville and was wonderful - could thoroughly recommend it. I guess if I were not coming to spain again anytime soon (we now live in spain) I would split my time between perhaps Seville and Ronda/Grazalema - depending on how you are travelling - car or train. Alternatively Seville and Grenada. As for booking in advance - we did book an apartment for the entire time but not sure all accomm etc would be necessary. However there were more tourists in Seville at Xmas than a couple of weeks ago. Just remember the smaller towns will have many restaurants etc closed over that period - less so in the major cities. We have not been to Portugal so cannot comment.
