Sorrento Peninsula/Pompeii
Here's a possible itinerary.. How does this sound?
Dock in Naples and take the train to see Pompeii.
Take the train or bus to Sorrento Peninsula area. (What would be best to do, Sorrento Positano or Ravello?)
Then if in SOrrento, take the Hydrofoil back to Naples.
Does this sound doable in one day to be back on the boat to depart at 7pm?

Hi Ray,
Your trip is doable, but you have to check the schedules.
The train, Circumvesuviana, leaves from the station at Piazza Garibaldi.
See http://www.ondaverde.it/gruppo2i.htm
The hydrofoil and ferry schedules can be accessed at
http://www.capri.net/home/en/getting.php
You might find it more convenient to take the hydrofoil to Sorrento and the train back.
Hope this helps.

For someone who is trying to experience the Sorrento Peninsula, what would be the best town(s) to visit within a day after pompeii just to get a vibe of the atmosophere? I've driven the Road To Hana in Hawaii and figured that the Amalfi coast would be similiar so i've opted not to do that.. Therefore, any towns on the peninsula and surrounding area i'd love to visit, but just dont know which ones.

Positano and Ravello are not on the Sorrentine Penninsula, but instead are on the Amalfi Coast, whcih lies just beyond that.
If you are interested in the Sorrentione Penninsula, Sant'Agata is a really lovely toen to visit, and easily reachable by bus from Sorrento. I have driven the Hana Road also, and except for the fact that there are sharp turns, the Amafi Coast is different thatn the Hana Road. Also, if you like to hike, there are some beautiful hiking trails all aover the Sorrentine Penninsula. You can find wonderful views of Capri!

I'm really just interested in going to a nice area either on the Sorrento Peninsula or on the Amalfi coast and spend a few hours there before heading back to Naples to board the cruise ship.
(This is after visiting the Pompeii Ruins)

How interested are you in Pompei? We spent the better part of a day there and didn't even see half of the place. If your interest is similar, then I wouldn't plan on travelling farther than Sorrento after Pompei before taking the hydrofoil back to Naples. In the alternative, you could spend your remaining time at the archeological museum in Naples. It is most interesting in conjunction with a visit to Pompei.
Bear in mind that if seas are rough, you won't be able to take the hydrofoil and must backtrack by train to Naples. And don't cut it too close -- boats get cancelled, trains get delayed, traffic is worse than expected, etc.

Personally I'd choose between
- Positano + Pompei OR
- Sorrento + Pompei
For scenery the first wins!
It's quite easy by public transport, - but I'd go to Pompei last rather than first. Here's how I'd do it:
- Hydrofoil (08.50 from Napoli Beverello) to POSITANO (arr. 09.50)
http://www.metrodelmare.com/l-mm2.html
- Spend morning/have early lunch in Positano
- Catch Sorrento bus to META
http://www.uniplan.it/sita/s509.txt
- Catch Circumvesuviana train from Meta to POMPEI
http://www.massalubrense.it/circum.htm
- Return to port from Pompei
From the hydrofoil timetables it works better this way rather than doing Pompei first.
(I can map you out a scedule using public transport if you like ... )
Hope this helps ...
Steve
P.S. If you prefer the Sorrento option, here's the hydrofoil timetable:

I am traveling with a family who wants to see stuff and do stuff, so is Positano or Sorrento a better town to visit to walk around and see more stuff? Is there a place online to look up info on these towns?

Sorrento is a busy town with lots of shops and bustle. Positano has the setting and views. Both have their fans, but personally I'd choose Positano for a view of the unbelievable Amalfi Coast - one of the most spectacular in the world.

Ray - How you schedule it really depends how long you want to spend at Pompei - but here's how I'd do it:
1. Hydrofoil (08.50 from Napoli Beverello) to POSITANO (arr. 09.50)
(This is Metro del Mare service MM2 to Positano/Amalfi)
http://www.metrodelmare.com/l-mm2.html
------
2. Catch SORRENTO bus to META* late morning (12.55?)
Buses leave Positano at:
11.30 (daily except Sundays)
12.55 (daily except Sundays)
N.B - If travelling on a Sunday, your best option is at 11.45.
[Get bus tickets from any card shop/bar displaying SITA sign - and 'validate' on boarding ...]
http://www.uniplan.it/sita/s509.txt
[If you prefer more than 3 hours at Pompei you would need to catch the 11.30 bus]
------
3. Catch Circumvesuviana Naples train from META Station to POMPEI SCAVI.
Trains leave Meta for Pompei at:
13.31 (arrives Pompei Scavi 13.55)
14.01 (arrives Pompei Scavi 14.22)
N.B. 'Validate' rail tickets before boarding.
If you prefer more time at Pompei, there are earlier trains from Meta at:
12.14
12.44
13.14
------
4. Catch Naples train from Pompei Scavi to NAPOLI CENTRALE (Piazza Garibaldi).
Trains leave Pompei Scavi for Naples at:
17.07 (arrives Naples 17.44)
17.37 (arrives Naples 18.14)
(N.B. Validate tickets as above)
To be on the safe side I'd aim for the 17.07 ...
------
5. From Napoli Centrale/ Piazza Garibaldi you can return to your ship by bus (or taxi).
Buses (No.3S I think, but check ...)leave from Piazza Garibaldi to the port (Molo Beverello) every 5-10 mins.
Get bus tickets at the kiosk in the square.
The bus stop is at the far side of Piazza Garibaldi as you exit the station(by the traffic lights near HOTEL PALACE and the Garibaldi monument).
------
Hope this helps ...

My husband and & are flying into Naples in 3 weeks time and are needing to get to Positano. My question to you is this: Do we arrange for the hotel to come and fetch us for E100 or do we hail a cab at the airport to take us to Positano, OR as you have previously suggested taking a hydrofoil? Which would be best and most reasonable? Do you think a cab from Naples to Positano would be cheaper than E100?
Your help would me be most grateful.

My suggestion is to hire a car and driver for the whole day.Last April we left the ship ast 07.30A.M. and we had a wonderful driver till 06.00P.M.
The tour of Pompei and the Amalfi coast was the highlight of our cruise.

Ray: if you want to take a look at photos of the Sorrento pennisula area, go to the website www.ilnido.it That's the hotel we're staying at, and they've put lots of info about day trips. They have some fantastic pictures of Sorrento, Amalfi coast, etc. It will make you want to go there tomorrow!!

Steve James and Katty both gave good advice. You can do it yourself or, you can hire a driver for the day. I prefer to hire a driver because you see so much more without worrying about schedules, so to me it is worth it! You should be able to see Positano, shop for beautiful inlaid wooden items in Sorrento (we bought a chess set and jewelry box,) see Pompeii and the museum in Naples. If you take the 2 hr. tour of Pompeii, you won't see much, you will have to go back, but I recommend that you spend at least 2 hrs. at Pompeii, 1-2 hrs. at museum in Naples, lunch in Positano at Le Sirenuse (to get the best view), shopping in Sorrento. Have a great trip!

Now with all the hype about Sorrento, I dont know which to choose. Positano or Sorrento...
Trying to see both towns as well as do Pompeii would be too much, right? Or is that managable?

Ray - Trying to do all 3 would really be a rush - you wouldn't have more than an hour or two anywhere.
If you do choose Positano, I meant to add above ...
META - Getting to the station:
The bus arrives at Meta in the small central piazza, where it turns around.
The bus stops in front of a bar in the piazza.
META STATION is 3 mins. walk (unsignposted) from here.
Take the tree-lined road immediately to the left of the bar down the hill.
After 200m the road forks - take the LEFT fork.
The station is just round the corner.
------
If you want to shorten your journey time between Positano and Pompei you could pre-book a taxi
with one of the Positano taxi companies, e.g
www.flaviogioia.com
www.positanocarservice.com
This might save 30-45 mins.
------
A correction re. buses from Piazza Garibaldi (Naples) to the port:
You can catch any bus heading to Piazza Municipio from Piazza Garibaldi.
(Piazza Municipio is a short walk from Molo Beverello)
Hope this helps ...

Rosita - A taxi would probably charge you more than a pre-booked limo. € 100.00 is about the going rate for a limo. You could try the above limo companies for a quote, but I suspect you won't get lower than 100.
The hydrofoils are pretty infrequent, so limo is really your most comfortable option unless you want to use public transport via Sorrento (- there is an airport bus there) or Naples.
Hope this helps ...

What are the ticket prices for the hydrofoil from Naples to Positano?
Let me see if i got the right idea for traveling...
Arrive Naples
Take Hydrofoil to Positano (Now, on the way, does it hug the coast so you can see a great deal of the beautifulness?)
Spend some time in Positano (Walk around the town and look at shops, eat and maybe do a hike somehwhere to see a lookout point?)
Take the bus from Positano to Sorrento
Take the train from Sorrento to Pompeii
Then the train from Pompeii back to the port in Naples
OR---
Take the hydrofoil from naples to Sorrento
Walk around (What is there to see/do there?)
Take the train from Sorrento to Pompeii
The train from Pompeii back to the port..
Do either sound logical? I want to make sure i understand the possible travel options..
thanks so much
