gailw.... in reply to the first of those two:

Using buses for both legs of your trip to Paestum sounds a fine idea!

................................

For shopping in Vietri, you should be able to get off at the stop near the Solimene workshops - immediately recognisable in real life, soon after the bus turns inland...

- it's the rightmost blue "SITA" symbol on this...

... and you'll then pass many of the ceramic shops in walking thru' the town to the next SITA stop, shown near the "16" on that same map, where you can get back on an Amalfi-bound bus again!

But, as well as taking the SITA Amalfi bus to get to Solimene, any of these of the CSTP line that you see outside the station in Salerno should also be OK for getting you there....

:::::::::::::::::::

Trust we're OK with all of that?

gailw... 2

Of course your SITA bus to Salerno isn't going to continue on to Paestum.... you'll have to get off that one, and wait for the CSTP #34 which does go there!

Their routes overlap for a stop or two - but do change at Piazza della Concordia as there's one long pullin that all the different lines use, with the CSTP one being first - so you'll probably have to walk back just a little from where you'll be dropped by the SITA, which - for sure - will not go to the train station, but to Via Vinciprova... as the timetable shows (*)

Here's an orange CSTP bus waiting there:

... and how the 'empty' stop looks:

......................................

Personally, I wouldn't touch the Amalficoastweb site with a bargepole - there's no such thing as a summer timetable, with the individual routes changing at different intervals to suit their users' needs!

Instead, the only place I'd look is here:
http://www.sitasudtrasporti.it/index.html

... with this link getting the one for Salerno to Amalfi and back (*) - although the contents will very probably be updated mid-June, when the schools close:

And please, have no doubt about it, the last stop on the CSTP #34 - despite what you've told above - is at Salerno's train station - STAZIONE FS SALERNO.

As shown here, if one bothers to look:
http://www.cstp.it/linee/34fe.pdf

That's also where you'll catch the SITA bus for Vietri - or to its end, Amalfi!

ky bourbon, thanks for your input
Peter: your information including photos of what to look for is fantastic!
To recap: from Amalfi, take SITA bus to Salerno, get off at Piazza della Concordia and take CSTP #34 to Paestum.
Leaving Paestum, take CSTP #34 (orange) to to Salerno train station, "Stazione FS Salerno", where we'll catch the SITA bus for Vietri/Amalfi.
If we do go to Vietri, we can get off at station #24 on the map of Vietri you included, walk along through town and get back on the Amalfi-bound bus near #16 on your map. In addition to the SITA Amalfi bus, we could also take CSTP buses with route numbers 1, 4, 9, 68, or 69.
Grazie mille for your assistance (and corrections, if I'm still not 'getting it')

Gail - that's almost exactly how I'd do it! One or two minor things though...

From Salerno, you'd get off the bus slightly beyond that "24" (a hotel on the coast road) - have a look back to the post that began, "gailw.... in reply to the first of those two" and read the caption to the second photo!

::::::::::::::::::::::::

Salerno's station square is the CSTP depot, but it looks as if - of those you've listed - only the 4 and 9 run between there and Vietri... with the others criss-crossing the area, and just happening to meet up in Vietri?

With all the buses, it's worth getting into the habit of confirming with the driver that he's going to... wherever... as you board - not least because they'll often point out one that may be setting off sooner!

::::::::::::::::::::::::

Can't tell you much about Paestum stops for the 34 bus... but if you're not exhausted after the side-trip to the 36th's memorial, and the timing suits, you might instead take the train back to Salerno.... and even change there to one for Vietri (so as to arrive much as we did on the day I took those photos).

That way you'd walk down and through the town, in the opposite direction to that discussed thus far, and eventually end up at the stop next to the Solimene shop, for the bus home?

Not very many afternoon trains, with the first not leaving Paestum until 14:06 - but the pairings with those for Vietri are shown on.....

http://www.pbase.com/isolaverde/imag...63690/original

(with expanded details for the 15:09 combination, as an example, at the foot of that)

Quite a busy day, hope it goes well!
