Solo trip to Provence, where to stay?

Hi, I plan to visit provence this late June for 8 days. I plan to stay in Aix and Arles for several days seperately and from there going to see some areas nearby. I read from this forum that st.remey can also be the good base. what do you think about it? If to say Aix and Arles, any hotel suggestions for me?

In Arles, the Hotel Calendal is a great little place. Nice staff. Lovely garden/terrace. Of course, it all depends on your budget. There are much more luxurious places than this.

St. Remy is a good base because its fairly central. Some of the accomodations in the surrounding countryside are nice, but the town of St. Remy just didn't do it for me. Found Aix and Arles prettier and more interesting (Aix especially). Unfortunately, I'm yet to spend a night in Aix, so I can't recommend a hotel.

Thank you Cimbrone. Yes, I've heard about the hotel Calendal, it seems to be a popular hotel in Arles. If I'm going in June, how long should I need to book in advance then?2/3 months in advance?

how about Aix, does anyone stayed in a B&B called Sous le Tilleul or Hotel Cezanne before. can you give some comment for these two hotel? Thanks.

In Arles, Hotel d'Arlatan, a 3 star which is in a former mansion. Furnished with antiques. Reasonable rates.

I would contact the Calendal right away for June. It's very popular.

Aix seems like a difficult town to find just the right hotel. Maybe that's why I haven't stayed there. My research in the past shows the "charming" ones to be a bit dingy, and the higher end ones to be too "modern."

I'd also be interested in any recommendations of a place in Aix that is old-feeling, but nice.

I can tell you that, if money is no object, the Villa Gallici in Aix is a place at which I've always dreamed of staying.
