Being married to a US soccer maniac, who watches all European matches, tapes the ones in the middle of the night, and tried desperately to get to a soccer game while we were in Spain in May, I have this to offer:

According to the schedule of the "Primera" league, there are games on the 12th (and 19th ):

Sunday, September 12
--------------------
Rayo Vallecano vs. Real Sociedad
Atletico Madrid vs. Celta Vigo
Sevilla vs. Real Zaragoza
Oviedo vs. Racing Santader
Barcelona vs. Espanyol
Valencia vs. Alaves
Malaga vs. Real Betis
Deportivo Coruna vs. Valladolid
Athletic Bilbao vs. Real Madrid
Mallorca vs. Numancia

Barcelona and Real Madrid are the big guns, I'm told. Also told you can usually get tickets day-of-game, and this is only the 2nd or 3rd game in the new season. Ask your concierge -- great way to make friends (they're all fans).
Check http://sports.yahoo.com/m/world/spanish/fixtures.html for full schedule -- sorry I can't parse what city the games are in, but maybe you can. (There are other leagues, many cities have more than one team, but this is the best.)

Salud! GOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAALLLLL!

Hi, Don.
The league begins next weekend. By seeing at the schedule Cassandra sent you, I say you have a difficult selection. Watching the Barça playing the derby against the Español at home is difficult to beat, but the Athletic is the only team without foreigners, and has never been in the Second Division. San Mamés is the Cathedral of the spanish football, and our lads are called the lions. And playing Real Madrid...
Although it can be difficult to get tickets for these games. I would choose something a bit different, like Valencia (they beat last Sunday Barça at the Superbowl) or Celta (a big surprise last season, and the best team at this preseason).
I´ll try to find the URL for some of these teams, and send them to you.
I forgot, the cities where they are playing:

Barcelona vs. Espanyol - Barcelona
Athletic Bilbao vs. Real Madrid - Bilbao
Atletico Madrid vs. Celta Vigo - Madrid
Valencia vs. Alaves - Valencia

Good luck with your search.

Very Very helpful! Thanks to all, I think I am aiming for the game in Bilboa on the 12th. It best fits my travel schedule and I believe <B>any game in Europe will outdo my spectator experiences in America.
Thanks
