Good question!
I asked the same question and my friends who'd been to France replied that USA beef is much better quality, so why risk it when there are so many other things to eat. Apparently game is really good. Of course your teenagers might not like the idea.....!

The sauces in France are so good because they have to hide the taste of their lousy meat. It's a fact.

In America, our hamburgers are actually made with beef, unlike those nasty hoof/ear/byproduct burgers you find in Europe.

Cathy, are you asking if the beef is safe? Yes, it is safe to eat. Millions of Frenchmen (or is that Frenchpersons, in today's "politically correct" culture), eat it every day and they "live to tell the tale". Would I eat it? Of course, and have! Though the French do a lot of fantastic things with chicken, too.

I have eaten, and will continue to eat everything I'm offered in France! The steak and frites are wonderful. Last time I had it, it had more of a butter sauce than what I think of as Bernaise but wow, it really was good. Historically, I think the sauces were meant to disguise beef that was left unrefridgerated too long, but that was hundreds and hundreds of years ago. Can't believe we could have a squabble about American vs. French beef here.

yes, I just did, in fact. I actually forget about that thing, but probably would have anyway. I like steak au poivre myself. Decide for yourself, it's just a personal choice -- there is a risk but it is estimated at maybe 2 billion to 1 or something, it's up to you. In any case, you can read all about it on the travel pages of www.cdc.gov (search on BSE) and make up your mind. I would think the risks of catching some bacterial or virual disease might be higher from game than beef, but I don't know. I am not a big game eater (yuck), and don't really know what that might be at this time of year (okay, they were serving up pigeon down in Provence, but I consider them rats with wings).
