Does anyone know if there are any flights from the U.S. to Germany that still allow smoking ? My traveling partner gets very nervous flying anyway, and this would be a help.

Why doesn't your travelling partner try nicotine plaster or chewing gum or those inhalators?

had inhalators with him on a trip within Europe and was very pleased with them.

As a smoking cessation facilitator I agree with the previous answer. Nicotine gum or if he's is a heavily addicted smoker wearing the patch *and* using a low dose of the gum should help him out. Even if he does not want to stop smoking, cutting down the amount he smokes for several days before leaving will lower the amount of nicotine in his system therefore the cravings won't be so bad. Also, people in my cessation classes have used St. John's Wort and it has helped them immensily with the "edginess" and stress of quitting. Apparently folks in Europe have used it for years in place of Valium but it has to be taken for about several days to a week before it will work. As far as the flights are concerned: When booking my flight I wanted to be assured that it was 100%25 smoke-free and found that most european flights are that way. The following airlines still allow *some* smoking but not on all flights: Adria Airways (airline for Slovenia), Aero Costa Rica, Aeroflot Russian International Airlines, Aerolineas Argentinas, AeroMexico, a few Air France flights but good luck-they're on strike, Air India, some Alitalia, Egyptair, and some Austrian Airlines. I think that my earlier recommendations might ease his anxiety-good luck!

Another thought might be to fly from the East Coast (don't know where you're originating) but if you're on the West Coast you can fly to say JFK breaking up the trip, take a needed break/smoke etc. then fly on to Europe. Good luck.

Check out LTU International Airways. I know they fly to Germany and they allow smoking on all of their international flights. Get's a bit smelly, so try and get seats that are near the dividing line.

I thought Alitalia still allowed smoking on flight to Italy and Air France, but don't think Lufthansa does. If it's really a big deal--call the airlines and ask. I'm almost totally sure that no U.S. carrier allows smoking anymore. I've been on a lot of flights lately---some of those aboard must be smokers and they must be doing something about their nicotine withdrawal. I hate smoking, but as a former addict, I know how threatening it can be to have your cigarettes forbidden. I used the Nicorette gum--you have more control than with the patch. Good luck. <BR>

Alitalia does not allow smoking on its trans-Atlantic flights which is why I fly them; Air France does, which is why I do not fly them! <BR>

Have to disagree about no smoking on Alitalia. Recently flew from New York to Rome and almost choked on the fumes coming from the smoking and business sections of the plane. Never again!!!

If Alitalia has changed they policy, I would be interested in knowing. It seems they have the best non-stop prices to Italy, but I would never fly with them again after the 14 1/2 hour flight with a chain-smoking crew I experienced 2 years ago! <BR>
