Slowly does it...our trip to north Italy

progol - i was thinking the same thing about the Sud Tirol. On my way to the airport at the end of my last visit to Venice I was accosted by a very nice lady who asked me in italian about the best way to get to see the Grand Canal. Of course because the acqua alta was disrupting our journey this was not such a silly question. After a while she asked if I spoke German so we switched and both felt more comfortable. When i asked her where in Gernamy she came from she said she was italian but from Bolzano in the Sud Tirol. I've looked and it's about 2 ½ hours in the train from Venice - would make a nice long weekend!

I know this is a couple of years old now, but I have to `top` it as it contains such wonderful information on the area and such fabulous photos! I am particularly grateful for the information on using public transportation, as that is how I travel. Last time in the Dolomites I drove, but don`t want to do that anymore and your trip report shows that it is possible!
I have a three week trip to Paris and Lyon schedule for late August/September, but that might not happen as UK may put France on the Red list. So, I am looking at alternatives in Northern Italy. You have been an inspiration.
Many thanks ... Ger

Thanks, Ger, I pore over TR’s and get so much useful information, so it’s kind of nice to share experiences.
Your Puglia TR is one I’ve saved, also because of the public transportation experiences and your solo travel inspires me. I don’t have the confidence for solo travel yet.
And this was a reminder of the great year of travel we had in 2019, Switzerland in June and Italy in September. Thank goodness we did it then.

Lovely report....I look forward to referencing it when we begin our planning for 2023. Have you been to southern Italy? I'm planning on including Sicily, Basilicata and Puglia in my next itinerary.

Thanks, I just subscribed. P.a.M. is definitely on the itinerary. I also want to stay in Lecce as a base and take a day bus trip to the Tyrrhenian coastal beaches - about 1.5 hours each way. I'm not looking for a beach holiday but I'd like to see the aquamarine waters which they call the Seychelles of Italy or something?? I'm reading Frances Mayes' Meet me in the Piazza and getting inspired with yet more destinations. This next year is dedicated to research and reading Fodor trip reports!
