Do you ever wonder why people even bother writing a response when they don't have an answer?

Hotel Dolomiti, Calle Priuli 72-74 telephone: (041) 715113-716635. About $110-130 a night. That is cheap for Venice.

Hi,

I stayed at the hotel Caneva between the Rialto and San Marco. It was clean and the management was very nice. Not all rooms have a private bath, so be sure to request one if you desire. It was very plain and I think it is about $70.00 a single or $90.00 a double with breakfast. Not bad. Do a google search and you will find it.

We usually stay at Locanda Silva in Castello about an eight minute walk from San Marco. It cost us $104 -for a double room with a shower -per night in April 2002.Actually $100 per night for a three night stay.
Fax 041 528 6817
tel 041 522 7643

Many Europeans stay there. It is probably $80 for a single without a shower.

Terri,

By definition the nicer hotels in Venice are expensive. However there are decent budget places to be had. Of course it's always more helpful to define your understanding of "cheap" with a price range. I know there's a convent in Venice that's supposed to be a good place for inexpensive, clean, simple accommadations. A couple hotels to check are:

Hotel Noemi, http://www.hotelnoemi.com/

Locanda Ca’Foscari

Hotel Galleria, http://www.hotelgalleria.it

Try Hotel Montecarlo. It is steps away from the plaza. We were there in July and we paid US 120. Go to hotel discounters.com

The Hotel Galleria will fit your wants, just remember rooms may be small in your price range. We stayed there in May and were very pleased.

http://www.hotelgalleria.it/indexbri.htm

Also, check out TImeout.com's site. They often have several listings of budget accomodations in Venice.

A convent is another wonderful option. There's a book: Sleeping (or Lodging?)in Italy's monasteries.

Hotel Galleria - very charming, tiny rooms, great location on the Grand Canal, under $100 a night.

Try religious lldging, for example the Instituto Artigianelli in Dorsoduro. Perfect accomodations, private baths quiet, great beds, etc. Cost us around 80 EURO per night.

Hotel Marin, across the canal from the train station. $80 (my keyboard doesn't make the Euro symbol) for a double with WC, breakfast included.

I stayed at Ai Bareteri. It is 135 Euros per night for a double. It had a private bathroom, nice breakfast in a breakfast room. The owners were very friendly and helpful. They even helped us carry our bags up all the stairs. The location was very good, it was between the Rialto bridge and St. Mark's.
The website is http://bareteri.hotelinvenice.com/
The

We discovered the AL GAMBERO on this site for our 1999 trip. Great recommendation and we will stay there again someday. Located on Calle dei Fabbri midway between the Rialto Bridge and St Marks Square. New remodeled rooms and baths.

Your idea of cheap and my idea of cheap may not be the same, but La Fenice et Des Artistes, right next to the burned out Fenice Theatre opera house, is charming and a good value. Very well-located, and some nice rooms. They are all different, so be sure to ask to see it before you give them your money. My favorite is on the top floor, and has its own private balcony with a view of the rooftops.

http://www.veniceby.com/fenicedesartistes/
