Skiing in Europe?
My husband and I have visited many ski resorts in the US as well as in Canada. Most recently went to Whistler, BC which was incredible...want to go somewhere different. Looking for great skiing and wonderful food/wine. Any suggestions on ski destinations in Europe or anywhere other than US or Canada? Looking for upscale accom!

Bev,
I've heard Whistler is great but have not been there so I can't draw any comparisons. Below are at the top of our list in Europe:

Chamonix, FR - www.chamonix.com (french only). And not far away is Megeve - www.megeve.com.

Zermatt, CH - www.zermatt.com. Suggest you take the train from Geneva.

www.liveski.com/resorts/ is a good starting point for comparisons.

Bev,
You can't beat the Berner Oberland for sights and skiing. I guess I'm a sissy, but I found Zermatt to be rather chilly -- lots of wind. In the Berner Oberland, you can choose Wengen if you want a car-free resort or Grindelwald if you think you'll have a car or if you want a bigger resort area. Swissair offers some good inclusive ski packages, or you can try Swisspak or the National Swiss Tourist Office (www.myswitzerland.com). They offer all ranges of accomodation, up to 4- or 5-star hotels. For info & photos of the area, go to
www.wengen.ch
www.grindelwald.ch
www.berneroberland.ch

s.

Bev, Whistler is a great resort, but I don't think you can beat skiing in Europe for atmosphere. Zermatt is fabulous, with very nice hotels and a view that just won't quit... I'd say it's probably what you're looking for. Try the Alpenhof and ask for a room with a balcony over the river. Their website is hotelalpenhofzermatt.com and it is a lovely house. You might also want to think about Austria, which is incredibly welcoming, with lots of "gemutlichkeit" and fun skiing. You can find first-class hotels even in the small ski villages near enough to Salzburg for a day trip. Check out the Berner Hotel in Zell am See; they have an English website at www.bernerhotel.com/english. On the other end of the country, at Ischgl or Galtur, you can ski down the opposite side of the mountain into Switzerland. Check out the website www.galtuer.at and I'd recommend the Hotel Post (which has an English site at galtuer.at/hotel-post/ Have fun!
