billyread - I've been to Venice probably a dozen times since 2015 and those crowds are usually pretty easy to avoid if you know where to go. And clearly I don't agree with you that it's over-rated.
annhig- I agree with you. If you only allow 2-3 days to see the most-visited tourist sites then you won't have the best experience. There's so much to see and learn about this chapter of history.

Following. Such great tips -- thank you!

We will go for a few days in late September and hope for the best regarding crowds. Sounds like the banning of cruise ships hasn't helped much. We will look at the Dorsoduro neighborhood for an apartment to get off the beaten path a bit.
