Silk underwear or wool pants?

Crusty - 100% cotton won't be very useful. Not warm and take a long time to dry. A good compromise for women (don't know of anything comparable for men) is Cuddl Duds. They are a really good brand and inexpensive. They are 50/50 cotton/nylon and very soft and warm. I prefer silk but Cuddl Duds are good too.

Nice silk underwear doesn't have to be expensive. And you can wear it forever, since it won't go out of style. I have tried several brands and my favorites are the silk pointelles from LLBean. The camisole is $19 and capri pants are $24. They also have a long-sleeved shirt for $29 and long pants for $26. The capri length pants are really nice because they don't show at the ankle when you sit down. Go to www.llbean.com. Click on womens, click on underwear. I also have a 3/4-length sleeve top from Wintersilks which is nice for the same reason - doesn't show at the wrists (I don't remember what it cost, but it was reasonable). You could order one silk top and one silk pants and try them - they are very lightweight and take up pactically no room in the suitcase. Then also take one pair of wool pants and just see which you like best. I think once you buy the silk underwear you will find that you wear it more than you think you will. I put mine on one night under my nightgown when I woke up freezing cold and couldn't find any extra blankets (European hotels sometimes turn the heat way down at night).

XOX: We have never done London in winter, but we go to Paris every January. I always take two pairs of black pants. Lined wool pants and silk underwear are great for "wind whipping off the Seine" days. A lighter material for the other pair--one that still can be combined with silk underwear if need be--provides the versatility you need. Last year we had a 50 degree day (just the lighter pants) and a 20 degree day (wool pants, silk underwear and my pantyhose plus heavy socks)in the same week.
