Does anyone know the driving distance and time from Siena to Assisi? Is this do-able for a day trip?

2-3 hours each way...doable - are you staying in Florence for any time - you could then just take the train in for the day - Assisi also has a train station too.

Yeah, we will be in Florence for three days, but wont have a car there. How long is it by train?

I don't remember exactly but I recall that the map website I used (mappy.com??) which lists driving times was right in the ballpark. From Siena follow the signs to "Perugia", ~Perugia you'll start seeing the signs for Assisi. Keep an sharp eye out ~Perugia in a congested city section of the highway, I remember you're going along then merging traffic (from a highway, not an on-ramp) appears on your right and *right* after that is the sign & highway (right) split for Assisi. It comes up fast and it's a tough cross-over from the left lane, easier from the right lane. Regards, Walter

from Florence to Assisi by train - 1.5 hours each way. You could do day trip easily - just wandering, hanging out and seeing the cathedral

I've driven between Siena and Assisi twice. Both times it took me 1:30 hours. If you leave Siena early, you shouldn't have too much problems parking.<BR><BR>On the other hand, the direct train between Florence and Assisi takes 2:20 hours. If you add the time needed between hotel and train station, train waiting, the bus ride up/down the hill from Sta. Maria degli Angeli (where the trains station is located), etc., you'll need at least 6 hours back and forth. Do it by car, from Siena. Drive nonstop going there and play it by ear on your way back. Depending on the available time, you may go for a short visit to Spello (15 minutes south) and/or Foligno (5 minutes more). You may also stop at Lake Trasimeno.
