Sicily: Route to drive to see Mount Etna?

I did a google search and didn't come up with too much info. We will be driving from the Agrigento area to Taormina, and would like to take a scenic drive in the Mount Etna area. Are there any particular roads to be taken to be able to take in the volcano?

Etna is a huge volcano and there are numerous small roads all over it. If you will be taking the A19/A18 toward Taormina, you could leave the highway at the Catania/Nicolosi exit and head north toward Nicolosi and continue a very difficult drive up the mountain toward Sapienza. Of course, recent volcanic activity may have closed all or most of this road. Or, continue north on the A18 and exit at the Linguaglossa/Fiumefreddo exit and head west toward Linguaglossa and then up the mountain toward Mareneve and Fornazzo. Near Fornazzo and Milo there is a shrine dedicated to the Virgin, built by the people of the small village that was miraculously saved from the lava and there are some spectacular lava fields in the area.
