Should we skip Sorrento and Amalfi Coast?
Need your help oh wise ones!
Right now we are planning on arriving in Rome on Tuesday, May 4 early in the morning. Heading straight down to Sorrento, where we are planning on staying 3 nights. (we have hilton honors points here so to us that is 3 free nights) Then we are going to come back and stay in Tuscany for 3 or 4 nights, not sure where yet and then go to Rome for the last 3 or 4 nights, staying at the Hilton Airport Thursday night the night before we head out.
My question is whether we should skip Sorrento and spread more of our time between Tuscany and Rome also allowing us to get to Florence or should I keep the itenarary the way it is? The reason we keep sticking with Sorrento is the free hotel which is nice, but we don't get to go to Italy everyday so I would like to make the most of it.
Any insight on what you think we should do would be great! All we have straight is that we are flying in May 4 and leaving May 14. Thanks so much for your help!!

Hi missy,
Nothing better than a honeymoon on the Amalfi Coast, except for Venice.
I would suggest that you save touring Tuscany for another trip and go to Venice 3 nights.
Can you use your Hilton points to stay in Rome the last night? You can get a cab from the city to the airport for about 40E.

I would spend my time between Venice, Amalfi Coast/Sorrento and Rome. These 3 areas will give you a wonderful flavor of Italy...quick as it may be. I would not stay at the Airport Hilton....stay in the city and take a taxi on the morning of your flight.

missy - I agree that you should give Tuscany a pass until you can spend longer there. I stayed last year in Sorrento and Ravello with my two teenagers and we loved the Amalfi. Also you can get to Paestum, Pompeii and Capri from there, as well as climb Vesuvius, if you've a mind to. We then flew from Naples to Venice for 25E apiece! Saves alot of time. As to the Airport Hilton, we stayed there for 2 nights at the end of our trip - you can easily get into Rome using their shuttle service, the hotel has everything and we were glad to only have to walk across the skyway the next morning for our flight.

I am spending my honeymoon in Italy as well at the end of May. Same itinerary somewhat...fly into Rome, then take train to Florence (stay 3 days) then train down to Amalfi, stay at hotel quisisana in capri 3 days then 2 nites in Sorrento and end last 3 days in Rome at the Hotel Russie. ANy good hotels you can suggest or heard about in Sorrento? I am reading mixed reviews...
Have a wonderful time!!

Hi Missy,
If you are an art lover, don't miss Florence. It is incredible. I would give up time in Rome so I could experience Florence.
If and when you go to Sorrento, take a side trip to Pompeii which offers the unique experience of feeling connected and close to an ancient people and culture.

Florence is incredible if you are hugely into Renaissance art and architecture. Unfortunately, the city itself is pretty bad in terms of pollution, crowding, and traffic congestion. If you are a Renaissance nut, then Florence is a must. If you aren't, then it's almost obligatory to see the highlights of the art and architecture, but I'd get in and out as quickly as possible.

Just a brief amen from an old lover...see Florence for art and Sorrento/Amalfi for scenery. It's all so romantic! Young lovers will want to see both even if they only have eyes for each other! As for Venice? Well, maybe but only with lots more time. Yes, include Pompeii, Capri as well.

I think the weather in early May would be nicer in the south (Bay of Naples, Amalfitano). I prefer the food in the south.
But, as you can see from the other comments, where you should go depends on what interests you. I'd do some research and make your own decision.
Pompeii is amazing and the coastal scenery is gorgeous. Venice is like no other place on earth. Frankly, so are Florence and Rome. Where else can you walk in the footsteps of Michelangelo, Galileo, da Vinci, Botticelli, Dante, the Medicis, Carravaggio, Hadrian, Nero, Caesar? With only 9 or 10 days (and it being your honeymoon), I'd pick just two places for this trip.

Dear Missyw22,
I would start in a magical way - 3 nights in Venice !
You'll then be energized for 3 nights in Rome....
And then onto the real honeymoon, 4 nights on Amalfi Coast !!! (Fly out of Naples)
What a wonderful way to start your new life together

I agree with staying at the airport Hilton in Rome, if you are leaving from Amalfi area to get back to the airport, stay in Amalfi area as long as you can that day, then check in late in the day or evening at the Hilton.
I never have seen the point of leaving Amalfi area early to stay in Rome the last night and then having to cab it to the airport early in the morning.
