Are you the type of person who likes to organize your time, keep things on schedule, and make reservations and plans month in advance? If so, Italy can be infuriating--public transportation, guided tours, etc have kind of a lackadaisical approach to things. On the other hand, if you are the type who feels comfortable showing up in a city without a hotel reservation, you'll love it. As far as things to see, we did the following five things and I'll put them in rank order: 1) Venice; 2) Siena/Tuscany; 3) Rome; 4) Florence; 5) Cinque Terre. If you do Florence, I'd stay in Siena and bus in. However, I found it overrated. After seeing Venice and Siena, Florence seemed like a shopping mall with some great museums.

I agree with Ryan's recommendations for places to visit in Italy. I however think that Milan has good public transportation but you have to understand that their culture moves at a slower pace and you will be delayed waiting for trains... it's all part of the Italian experience! Italy is a BEAUTIFUL country!
