Sharp decline in robberies of tourists tipped for Rome

Thief gets more than he bargained for. But mightn't be a good idea in say, Sicily, LA or Moscow (or Seoul for that matter) -

<There was a sharp decline in armed robberies in Rome last year with 4246 cases reported, compared with 5133 in 2007.>

Do they really mean <armed robbery>? Everything I've read and heard about crime in Italy is that it is of the non-violent sort.
