It looks like the most direct route has you going through Klagenfurt and Graz. If you don't mind sidetracking a little bit, Ljubljana (Slovenia) would be a nice place to spend a day or two. Its a lovely little city filled with beautiful architecture, decent restaurants and cafes, and the castle affords some gorgeous views of the Alps. From here its only an hour's drive to Bled, also in Slovenia. Beautiful alpine lake with a charming island in the middle and an overall pictureque setting.

Hi M,
I think that Trieste would make a nice stop for your first night.
From there, you can go around Slovenia to Salzburg, via Villach. You can overnight in Villach or go straight to Salzburg.
Salzburg is worth 2 nights - 3 if you take a drive through the Salzkammergut.
Take the Discovery route at www.viamichelin.com from Salzburg to Vienna.
You might want to visit Linz on the way.
Enjoy your visit.

Sorry. You didn't mention which countries you wanted to visit and I thought Slovenia was wonderful so I added my imput.
I too agree that Salzburg and the Salzkammergut is a great area. We also loved the Wachau Valley in Austria. We drove through Linz twice and could find no reason why a tourist would want to visit, as its very industrial, but to each his own of course.
