@thursdaysd Dubrovnik is not whole Croatia
there is plenty other places very valuable to be visited in croatia and all those places are a kind of hidden gems
in Croatia, there are 7 UNESCO WHS adn Dubrovnik is just one of them.. very soon it will be even more (of course, you can visit all those places even now, before they will be officially UNESCO Heritages), plus, there are 14 UNESCO non-material Heritages in Croatia...

@max_cro - even a tour guide should be able to recognize irony. Dubrovnik is simply the worst example of the fact that Croatia has been well and truly discovered - by Europeans if not by Americans.

@thursdaysd - I will not answer here in Fodors again on any question from you, because, obviously I'm not able to recognize irony
but, just now for the last time, I'm sure that you didn't have many chances to speak with our guests... every single one of them will say the same, that Croatia is really hidden gem... maybe you think that all Universe is going around Croatia, but this is not true... there are many beautiful places around the world, many of them are famous... Croatia is still in a process of discovering... again, Dubrovnik is not whole Croatia, even Dalmatia is not whole Croatia... I don't know if you live here or not, but I can be sure that even you don't know many things about Croatia and many hidden beautiful sites, castles, natural wonders, buildings, great history... so, Croatia is not well discovered even from Croatians...
but, obviously, there is no sense in that to explain this to you, because, you know just few things and you are sure that you know everything... that's not true - that's sad

" I'm sure that you didn't have many chances to speak with our guests... every single one of them will say the same, that Croatia is really hidden gem"
I actually find that very sad -- many of Croatia's most delightful sites have become SO well known that determining how to avoid the onslaught of crowds has become a major challenge. So either your tours are taking people to places that aren't among those recognized as Croatia's highlights, or you are catering to a very ill-informed clientele.
I agree that there is much to see in Croatia that is worth seeing. I agree that there are some parts of Croatia that are worth seeing and yet remain off the radar of most travelers. I disagree with the suggestion that Croatia is "hidden." I think the numbers of threads and trip reports about it provide support for my assertion. In fact, even in 2009, when I visited, there were SO many trip reports about Croatia on Fodor's that I didn't bother to file one.

Let me restate: even in 2009, when I visited, there were SO many trip reports about Croatia on Fodor's that I didn't <s>bother to file</s> think there would be any value to filing yet another one.

@kja I wrote names just of 14 castles (and there are dozens of them more)... how many of them have you visit? and how many of them you have even hear about?
do you know how many times average Croatian visit Plitvice lakes in a lifetime? what do you know about the stone wall in Ston?
do you know how many national parks we do have in Croatia and how many of them are really recognised by foreign tourists? do you know that we are the 3rd country in the World according to UNESCO intangible Heritage? How many people really knows that?
and, here, on forum I found many things that are wrong and those information are given to people who'd like to visit our beautiful country. All those facts just point what I said: for most of the people Croatia is still hidden gem, especially for the people who are first comers... but it is SAD that Croatia is hidden even for some people who are giving the information here (fot example: cars are NOT forbidden on Mljet, Zagreb is really very interesting destination, especially lately...etc...). I live Croatian Tourism every day and every day I have a chance to speak with our guests... everyone of them knows about Dubrovnik and most of them about Plitvice (OK, I met some people visiting Dubrovnik and they didn't even hear about Plitvice lakes, and they were already a week here in Croatia, I'm not talking about thousands of the people from cruisers).. all those people were more then surprised when they noticed so many different small regions in Croatia, so much diversity...in any way: food, wine, culture, architecture, history, dialects, people's mentality...
kja, how many people knows that we have the smallest town in the World, here in Croatia, or the shortest river in Europe, or the 2nd largest defensive wall (just after Great China wall)... what do people knows about glagolic letters, what people knows about Tesla - the great inventor? and many, many other things...
but, the problem is in our National Touristic Organisation... all marketing is about the coast... our guests doesn't even know about wines, castles and all other things in eastern part of Croatia.
anyway, I don't expect that our guests must know anything... that's why we are here... (I always ask Croatians how much they know about Estonia or Bolivia). Big problem is that most of the people here think that Croatia is well known, that everyone knows about our soccer team, Janica Kostelic, our Waterpolo team...
I try to convey to our guests the experience of Croatia and my passion .. I believe that even those who writes about Croatia does the same, but it still doesn't mean that we're worldwide known, , even with so many UNESCO World Heritages and beautiful nature...
sorry for long post
all the best
