Scottish highlands in Jan?

My favorite novel of all time is WUTHERING HEIGHS so natutally I would like to go see the scottish highlands. How far is it from Edinburgh? Is it pure craziness to go in Jan?

It is set in the Yorkshire Moors - not the Scottish Highlands. And neither place is particularly a good place to visit in January.

I disagree, the Highlands are hauntingly beautiful and refreshingly desolate in January.

right, Sheila?

I agree they are "hauntingly beautiful" in January. BUT for a first time visitor, January is not the time to go to the Highlands. The driving can be trecherous, the days are short, most of the attractions are closed, and some roads can be closed by snow.

They are hauntingly beautiful any time - so don't go in January unless you REALLY know your way around. Go at a time of year when you can actually see something.

Jan. IS good for skiing at Aviemore.

On the assumption this is a wind up, I have nothing to add. On the assumption it is not, thenBR>

You can reach "the Highlands" within an hour's drive of Edinburgh. It's not somewhere with a line drawn round it on a map. It's more a state of mind. It's not craziness. But plan it well to take account of cold wet and snow.

If you go...please do not miss Glen Coe. One of the most hauntingly beautiful places I've ever seen. Tragic history as well.

US

The Highlands are beautiful in the winter...we went in February, and were first timers there and had no problems at all...even with a bunch of snow and children. Would do it again in a heartbeat. As in all travel...its as easy as you want it to be
