Scotland Yard - Still There?
In our Fodors book, we do not find Scotland Yard in the index. On a map that came with the book there is a "New Scotland Yard". Is that the same place, and are tourists allowed to visit? Whatever happened to the old Scotland Yard?

John, <BR>London's Metropolitan Police were originally housed in a portion of Whitehall Palace in a section called Scotland Yard because that's where visiting Scottish kings stayed. The Banqueting House on Whitehall is all that remains of the original palace. Scotland Yard no longer exists. In 1891 the police moved to a new building about a quarter of a mile south down Whitehall. The building was called New Scotland Yard; interestingly enough, its exterior walls were constructed of granite quarried by Dartmoor convicts. In the mid 1960s the police moved once again. The newest New Scotland Yard is about a half mile west of the former New Scotland Yard. It is on Victoria Street about half way between Victoria Station and Westminster Abbey. It is not open to the public for tours.
