no it's not,it is right on a bus route that gets you to and from the city center in 15-20 minutes ,regular buses day and night,should never have to wait more than 10-15 minutes for a bus,ok there is not a lot in the area regarding pubs and resturants,but it is by no means too far out, and if you are getting a decent deal then why not.
I live and work not far from the Aaron Lodge I know what I am talking about.

Everyone is entitled to their views and to me Old Dalkeith Road is not in the city, it's out in the countryside (there are fields !!). As regards 15-20 minutes to town on the bus - maybe in the middle of the night, certainly not at a busy time of day.

Sorry Caroline ,but when was the last time you were in the area,or took a bus from there into the city,I do so on a regular basis,day and night,even on a busy weekday morning or evening it is no more that a maximum of 25 minutes to the Bridges area (Tourist Central),in the eveving it is much quicker and that is coming from the Royal Infirmary which is a couple stops further out than the Aaron lodge,also further out than the Aaron lodge is Moredun ,Fernieside ,Ferniehill and Gilmerton housing areas and then only a short distance to Edumstone and Danderhall,hardly out in the country,yes one side of the road has fields but much of this is earmarket for the new Biomedical Park and for the New Urban park.

janisj,I am just trying to make it clear that the OP should have no worries about getting accommodation in this area,I have lived in Edinburgh for 40 of my 52 years and much of it in the area being asked about,I use buses on this route on a daily basis,I live and work in the area.
Ok I am a newbie to this forum but but sarcastic remarks like yours are uncalled for.Thanks for the welcome to the forum.
I hope that the contributions I make are helpful to the OP and are not negative like some of posts.

unclegis: I personally wouldn't want to stay 20-25 minutes outside the center. That is 50 minutes out of each day - more if one needs to return to the room for any reason.

Someplace like Castle View is a one minute walk from Princes Street. 1 minute walk vs 25 mins on a bus? Not that Castle View is the only recommended property (though it is excellent). There are many nice B&amp;Bs in, or w/i walking distance of, the centre.

What does the location of various housing estates have to do w/ anything? Not many tourists would have any interest in going to any of them?

If one is on a very tight budget - then staying outside the center can save money. But the OP has a generous budget. There is not a one-size-fits-all answer - but in the OP's situation there really is no benefit to staying out in the &quot;burbs&quot;.

All I have done is given unbias infromation on places suggested and have left it up to the OP to make their own mind up .
if you look at my original post on this thread you see my views on where to stay are totally different and I think a better area to stay in.I leave it to the OP to discount the places further from the city.

I would look for places in the Minto Street,Mayfield ,Dalkeith Road area,there are lots about.I pick this area beacuse it is nice ,lots of Goergian town house used as accomodation ,also this area is on th edge of the main city center,20-30 minutes walk or a 10 minute bus ride to all the sights.Edinburgh has a wonderful public bus service that gets you round the city quickly and cheaply.&quot;
