Scotland tips?

My friend and I are planning a post-graduation trip for fall, '99. We were wondering about the weather (among other things). Rain, of course, but is it frigid, windy, etc? We'll be backpacking, so what items of clothing would be worth the space in our packs? Thanks for the help.

Even August is rainy. Locals say,"If you can see the Loch, get out your umbrella." It's true. Take a lightweight rain jacket and waterproof the seams of your tent. It was cold at night and real windy on the coasts. Lots of open space. Beautiful.
A good place to avoid is Aviemore. Reminded me of a rundown Aspen with all the charm of a K-Mart. Pure plastic. Fern bars. Condos. Yucko. A great place: Pitlochry. Victorian. Quiet. Scenic. Yes, dress in layers -- waterproof on the outside, wool underneath.

Emily,

Spent two weeks in Scotland last August/September. Almost every day was rainy or damp so layers are a plus. Also, try two pairs of socks, one thin pair and a heavier pair on top...layering your feet keeps them warmer and you feel warmer.

You can wear an inexpensive poncho over your clothing to keep you dry and easily fold it up when the rain stops (it stops and starts frequently).

I started in Edinburgh and went north to Inverness (second Al's comment about Pitlochry...delightful town and people). Continued to Ullapool, Skye, Fort William, Loch Lomond, and Stirling with various stops in between. Email me if you'd like any information.

Adrienne
