These are places we liked.
Visit New Lanark near Glasgow. It is an old cotton mill village. Fascinating as they paid their workers fair wages and educated their children. Mind you the Children starte work at about 10 years old.

The Isle of Skye is fantastic. Loch Ness is lovely as well.

With only three days I would go to the Islands of the Hebrides and do a Distillery Crawl.

If you go to Nairn near Culloden the Latino Mexican restaurant was great five years ago. Culloden is missable unless you are particularly interested in the battle site and history. Scenery is fantastic everywhere.

peterSale: Sorry, but duplicating the same post doesn't fit every thread/itinerary. The New Lanark . . Loch Ness . . New Latino advice doesn't apply to bu67's plans.

They have worked on their itinerary for quite a while and are now looking for specific info for the two days between Ullapool ferry and EDI.

bu67: Great staying in Ballachulish -- MUCH better than FT William.

For places to stay the nights of the 20th and 21st - on the 2oth I wouldn't go much beyond Inverness (though again - not IN Inverness). You don't want to press too far in case the weather doesn't cooperate. I'd stay just west of I'ness like around Beauly -- or -- just east of town like Culloden.

Then you have a straight shot down the A9 to Blair Castle the next morning. I'd stay that night maybe someplace like Dunkeld. Lovely village north of Perth.

Your flight isn't until 18:25 so you have most of the day free and don't need to stay close to Stirling or EDI. From Dunkeld you can dash down to Stirling and spend 3+ hours there, and have a leisurely drive to EDI to turn in the car and fly out.

oh - meant to add. If you don't want to stop as far north as Dunkeld -- you could visit Blair Castle and then stop in Dunkeld to see the cathedral ruins and press on to Stirling that night.

janisj & peterSale: Thank you for jumping in with advice. It is greatly appreciated. I may have a couple more questions in the next few days.

Now, a few more questions on specific routes. I really appreciate all of the "hand holding" you have been providing!

EDINBURGH AIRPORT TO TURNBERRY/CULZEAN CASTLE on Wed, 13 Oct: It looks like (according to my Collins Road Atlas of Britain) that there are 2 or 3 possible routes.

1. The first would be to take the A720 SE of the airport and then head SW on A70 all the way to the outskirts of Ayr. Take A77 SW to Turnberry.

2. The second would be to take the A720 SE of the airport but go further and take A702 SW to Abington, head NW on M74 for 7 miles, and then get on A70 to Ayr, etc.

3. A71 is another variation of that general route. Any suggestions considering scenery, possible stops, etc.?

TURNBERRY/CULZEAN CASTLE TO GLEN COE/BALLACHULISH on Thurs, 14 Oct. We will certainly want to take advantage of the Robert Burns sites near Ayr on our way north. It appears that the way to do this is drive toward Glasgow on A77/M77. We would then head W on M8. Cross the bridge on M898 to Old Kilpatrick where we would pick up A82. A 82 will take us all of the way to Glen Coe/Ballachulish and ultimately to Ft. William. Depending on how long we linger in the Ayr/Burns area, we could be skirting around Glasgow in the middle of the day. We would want to get to Ballachulish by late afternoon.

As above, are there any suggestions about these routes, don't miss stops, etc.? Thanks again in advance for the advice.
