Scotland Housing, specifically St. Andrew's

Group of six making a golf trip.
Main question: Lodge in downtown St. Andrews OR in the surrounding areas?
We saw a castle turned into a place to stay in Cupars as well as houses to rent in both Leuchars, Tayport or Newport-on-the-Tay. They looked great but................
Are there bars, restaurants and stores in these places or are we going to wind up going into St. Andrews everyday. Heard the parking is awful in St. Andrews. Last thing we want to do is have to drive back and forth everyday to St. Andrews and spend a half an hour each time trying to find a parking spot. We have to have a flat or townhouse in St. Andrews; no B&B.

I have an old work friend who moved there with his Scottish wife and they have a hotel. Don't know if it's what you are looking for, but have a look. It's close to the Old Course but I don't know about the parking situation at the hotel.

I'd look for a rental in/near Crail, Anstruther, or Pittenweem. All are pretty seaside villages w/ pubs/restaurants/cafes.

And for a posh special meal - the Peat Inn.

Stay in town - when are you going? If it's outside of term time there should be a plethera of rental options. You don't want to driving into and out of St.A's morning, evening and night for golf and entertainment. Not least because the designated driver won't be able to enjoy a drink.

janisj i9s right on the money with The Peat Inn recommendation - it's 6 miles out of town and would recommend a taxi is in order as the whisky selection is extensive.

bettyk: when did your friend and his wife buy The Dunvegan? I spent many happy hours in there as a student getting outside of a pint of 80/- or two (or three or...). "The Dunny" (Oh how witty we thought we were!) was generally part of the route taking in The Niblick, Ma Belle's and a subterranean bar under The Marine Hotel (and which I can't for the life of me remember the name) where we'd invariably finish off.

Thinking back it's no wonder studying seemed such a chore!

Thread-jack over! Sorry!

Not sure where you got your information about parking being terrible. It certainly would be during a golf tournament, but for the rest of the year you shouldn't have significant difficulties (at least compared with a large town/city). There are actually many places where you can park for free, especially overnight.

I would definitely avoid the likes of Leuchars (very run-down airforce dormitory village), and there is very little to recommend Tayport or Newport either. Cupar is a slightly bigger town with more local services, restaurants, etc, but then you have an annoying commute to/from St Andrews every day.

I may have misread your OP. You seemed to be looking for a place where you would not need to go into St Andrews every day. That you wanted a place w/ some amenities/self sufficiency.

If you DO want to be in St Andrews every day, then stay IN St Andrews. Otherwise, I still suggest Crail or Anstruther would be head and shoulders above Leuchars, Tayport or Newport

Dr D, according to the hotel website, Jack & Sheena have owned the Dunvegan since 1994. I keep hoping to get there myself one of these days.
