scotland for week
First trip to Scotland and looking for places to see and places to stay. We like bed & breakfasts. Will be renting car & want to spend days in Edinburgh, St. Andrews area, Oban / Mull. Thinking of using Stirling as our home base. Enjoy scenery, the sea, a bit of history (castles), walking tours, & husband likes whisky (distillery).
Amy suggestions of things to see, B&Bs in Stirling, maybe Oban, would be appreciated.
Other areas near the above locations that we should visit?
Thanks!

A few suggestions:
i) Check out www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk - an excellent website that will assist you greatly.
ii) Use www.tripadvisor.co.uk to assist with finding great B&Bs - some people get a bit elitist about it but it raly is an excellent first place to look when you are trying to find accommodation.
iii) Stay in Edinburgh without a car for a few days and then travel.
iv) Spending a few days in each location rather than using a single place as a base would allow you to see more and spend less time traveling
v) Would be good to give more info - how long is your trip, when are you traveling, how are you getting to Edinburgh.
We are doing our first trip to the Highlands in July and are looking forward to it hugely.

This is Oban. We found an apartment in Edinburgh that was perfect and we enjoy that so much more than a B&B. You feel like you are really part of the city. Flipkey has a lot of options from cottages to apartments.

The Dunheanish House B&B in Oban is really as nice as the photos in the website show.

I agree with tjhome, don't take a car to Edinburgh. Navigating by car is very confusing for visitors, parking is expensive and there's a good local bus service that will get you to most of the main attractions. If you're flying into edinburgh airport it's only about half an hour by direct bus into the city centre.
I would leave Mull for anothert time unless you plan to spend several days there. It's not worth the cost of taking the car on the ferry for a day trip, and without the car you won't get far once you're on the island. A better day trip from Oban is to go south towards Lochgilphead. On the way you pass Kilmartin Glen and Dunadd, some of the most significant historical sites in Scotland although very few people in Scotland have heard of them.
Depending on when you are travelling you may need to book ahead for accommodation in Oban. Although there's lots of it, the town has a very busy ferry terminal and lots of passengers stay overnight before or after they sail.
If you have a couple of days in Edinburgh and then visit Stirling, Oban and St Andrews you won't have much left of your week. You could easily spend a week in any one of these place.
