what you said about a DCC Scam is all over Dufftown and the surrounding areas with our name attached to it. It is doing our buissnes a lot of harm with people thinking we are scaming our guests so can you see why we are not that happy about it.
Our business has been in our family for nearly ten years, my partners parents ran this business until retiring. They were so proud of the business they built up that they wanted to keep it in the family. We invested so much money in this business not just for ourselfs but for my children. When using keywords on the internet that can be related to other websites, such as our business name linked to to a scam, harms the business greatly.
I can understand if you think there is some scam on the go to warn other people. I believe it would have been a lot fairer to our business if you could have left our name out of it, even the town. As I'm sure you are aware this is a very small community.
You could have e-mailed us through our website and I would only have been too happy to tell you the bank that we deal with and then you could have taken it up with them. As I explained before, we were told it was a currency convertion service. But I definately will look into this further.

What a lovely read! Thanks so much for giving us lots of tips for future use.
HEY Isadore204! I didn't know you were a Wayfarer too! Have you posted a trip report yet? I have not done Burgundy only The Loire - River of Kings. Please tell me who were your guides on the walk! We had Eric Bonel(or Bonal). Excellent man!

Goweanbrae: This is what I would do -- get together w/ some of the other B&B and business owners in Dufftown and show them the relevant posts (Nukesafe's original one and the dialog back and forth between Nukesafe, you and I)
I'd be willing to bet they will all be interested and happy to learn about the pitfalls of DCC. I'm pretty sure most of those who have the new system also had inadequate training on it.
Anyone actually reading this thread would not come away thinking you had scammed anyone . . . . . . .

You do have a point (about getting with the other establishments). Unfortunately, if you have ever visited Dufftown, there are only a handful, most of which are cash only.
I believe there are 3 that offer credit card services, I think it depends on the bank you rent the machine from who offers DCC.
Maybe we'll just go cash only! The more I read up about DCC effecting USA visitors the less impressed I am. I can only hope that we get the same visitors through our home from USA as we have this year, and that this is not going to effect us.
It just surprises us that it only seems to effect you guys. I would be interested to know the effects on our european visitors also.

I've been to Dufftown many times (I lived in the UK for about 5 years and go back there frequently). Balvenie is one of my favorite small castles -- not to mention the Whisky by the same name
There used to be a small "taste of Scotland" restaurant on the main road that served scrumptious venison and other game. Can't remember the name of it.
anyway - don't fret about this - now you know all about DCC -- probably more than your bank manager does

Gowanbrae,
One last word on this subject. There is no scam involved in the DCC credit card charges as long as the merchant follows the clear instructions that appear on the screen of your charge machine to the effect; "Has the customer been informed, and has he accepted the charge in his own curancy?"
If the customer wants to pay extra for this "service", that is his business. What people object to is not being told that 1) it is optional, and 2) it will cost more. To find a significant extra charge on your card when you get home can come as a shock. Other Fodorites have challenged these charges with the merchant and have been lied to; "It is just a service to you" "We cannot change it, now.", etc. You did none of those things. You qickly and cheerfully voided the charge when I objected, and re-submitted the charge in the correct currency.
You, and the other extablisments in Scotland will have no further grumbling from us Yanks if you simply ask BEFOREHAND if we would like our bill charged in US Dollars. Most will say no, I'm sure, but it will avoid much unplesantness in future.

Thanks for your kind words, Donco.
Coco is indeed a vibrant person. When we are next in France we plan on renting her flat in Dijon for an extended stay. We only saw a tiny portion of Dijon and it would form a fine base for seeing more of Burgundy.
