Scala Reale/Context Rome - at what price?

We arrive in Rome from Toronto (hopefully)at 7:00 am and are staying for 3 days. My desire is to be able to take the Context Rome tours to BOTH the Forum and the Vatican.

The Vatican is no problem as it is being offered on the second afternoon. With respect to the forum tour, the only times that it is offered during our stay in Rome is at 9:15 the morning we arrive, or at 3:00 that afternoon.

Obviously the morning is too tight, but never having flown across the ocean, is it asking too much to take the 4 hour tour of the forum on our first afternoon in Europe?

I would not consider this for any reason other than that the raves on this web-site for this particular company have been so uniform.

By the way, the alternatives appear to be:

Romewalks-10:00 Day 1
Roman promenade- 11:00 or 2:30 Day 1
Enjoy Rome-2:00 Day 1
Through Eternity- 10:00 (2.5 hours) Day 2
(our vatican 4 hour
tour begins at 1:00)

We do not care about the extra cost (how often can we expect to be in Rome?) but never really having experienced jet lag, is this too much even for 2 relatively eager but still basically historically couch-potatoish late 40-year olds?

Please do not be shy with both your comments and recommendations.

I live in Switzerland, and met my sister in Rome last year and we did the exact thing you are asking about: we did the tour on the afternoon of the day she arrived. She did fine except for about the last hour, when she did start getting tired. She did say she was very glad she did the tour, which really was excellent. In some ways, a tour like that is the best thing to do, because it is better NOT to nap on your first day, or you may never readjust your clock. We did the tour, had an early dinner, and she went to bed early.

I think that you will be fine with an afternoon tour, especially if you're able to get some rest on your flight. It might be an early night, though!

With only 3 days, I would think you would want to maximize your time there. I find that when I travel anywhere, I'm pretty much ready to go when I get there, and enjoy the entire day (though collapse at night). Not sure whether it's excitement or what...

I suppose there is the option of checking into your hotel early and having a nap before the 3:00pm tour...

I would say go with the 3:00p.m. tour. You could also e-mail Petulia @ContextRome.com and ask her if there's any chance they'll be adding a Roma Antica walk on one of the other days.

Excellent question; I've been struggling with the same issue myself. Our group will consist of DH & myself, which I've no doubt we could do. What complicates matters is this trip is about my 73 YO mom and my 14 YO niece. DH & I have been to Italy before and I'd go on a Context Rome tour the next day; I'm concerned about Mom.

I agree with Cicerone. The secret to avoiding jet lag is to stay awake the entire day of arrival. The Forum might be just the way to get you through to dinner and then on your way to a great night's sleep. Being outdoors will help get you through. The Forum is a fascinating tour and I wouldn't be surprised if you get a second wind from the experience (minus a few yawns or two).
