ragout,

Arzak is also very laid-back to be a three Michelin star restaurant. A bit simplified: Akelarre is best for lunch with the great views etc, and Arzak is the place to go for dinner, ranked among the top ten-twenty restaurants in the world for some 25 years now, and as said, quite laid-back. http://www.theworlds50best.com/list/1-50-winners/Arzak

In Getaria I can recommend Elkano and Kaia Kaipe, although every restaurant down in the small harbour serves excellent fish and seafood. Had perhaps the lunch of my life here some 20 years ago, it went something like this and this is still the way it goes: http://www.thepauperedchef.com/2007/...-in-getar.html

Fabulous video about the fish and seafood culture in Getaria from 7.40 in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dqdjeGqnVKc

And about food crazy San Sebastian: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OwmBAvqa_0U

Have a great trip!

Hi ragout,
Thank you so much for your lovely words. I am absolutely delighted to read that you enjoyed my trip report. Apologies for the delay in responding but I am still traveling. Alas six week of Europe and London heaven ends today before I confront the day-long painful flight home. It's been worth every second though!

Just back to my experience at Akelarre. I won't suggest for a moment that my experience will be replicated in hours, or anyone else's, as these things are all contextual, individual and subjective too. For me, this was an unusual thing to do as I do not have the money to regularly dine at such places (and a six week trip from Australia to Europe costs a lot already ), but I wanted to do something special like this just once. Perhaps, because I do not dine like this regularly, I am easily impressed. But I don't think I would spend $AUD375 and be easily impressed with the result! However, it wasn't just the service, the amazing location and vista, the layout of the restaurant, or indeed even the food and wine that made it so special for me. It was, simply, the same thing that has made this entire six weeks so special: just being here and able to enjoy all that there is. That means different things for different people, and for me it means people, culture and history. Akelarre was the icing on the already perfect cake for me. I'll never forget it, or the people (and pinxtos and shopping!) of San Sebastián. If I ever train for a marathon then perhaps it is its town's event I will take part in.

For what it's worth, one of my friends who dined with me went to Arzak the night before (too much for me but there you go!) with another group of friends and they were all a little disappointed. They are harder to please, I think, than this uninitiated traveller, but my friend did say she much preferred Akelarre and even gushed a couple of times. She is not a gusher! She leaves that to me.

I best go and sort my overflowing suitcase out and hopefully one day I will get around to trip reports for Antibes, the Cinque Terre, Padua and Venice, Ortisei and the Dolomites, Florence, Rome, Paris and London!!

Oh thank you Adelaidean. In that case I will absolutely write one for you. I need a bit of time to do it justice. Incredible doesn't explain it. Right now I'm a little jetlagged after 24 hours of pain in which I slept for 45 minutes. I arrived home on Saturday night and slept last night because I was so exhausted but am a little worried that after being tired all day I have found a renewed energy at 7.30pm tonight! Fingers crossed I get my head back on straight soon and I will do that report!
