If you have a car, there are many, many spots to stay outside of the city that are much less expensive.

There are also spots along the bus route. Let us know if you will have a car and then we can take it from there. Also do a search on this form with Salzburg in the search box and you may get some ideas.

Try Institut St. Sebastian.

It is just across the river from the old part of town on Linzergasse. It has all the charm of a student dorm but it is clean, quiet and well located to see the town on foot.

I stayed at the centro-hotel last summer and paid 60 Euro a night with no reservation. It was clean, nice location on the less touristy side of the river and very nice helpful staff.

We used priceline for our recent stay in Salzburg and ended up at the Renaissance for $75 USD.

The location was good for us because we liked being near the bus and train station for the ease of catching whichever bus or train we needed. If you want to be right in the city center, the location wouldn't work though.

Even though it was a chain, we couldn't beat the price we got through Priceline and the comfy bed was great after two weeks of the very firm beds our rental apartments had.

There is no guarantee which hotel you will get with Priceline. However, I always check out www.biddingfortravel.com so I can make an educated guess about what we might get and it appeared to me that this hotel has the majority of winning bids for Salzburg.
